In the summer of 2005 the Nets began to make moves to possibly contend for a championship in 2006. The Nets drafted Antoine Wright to provide "3 point shooting" and "defense". The Nets would sign Shareef Abdur Rahim to give them a low post scorer, but the deal was recinded after they found an issue with Rahim's knees. The Nets would shore up their bench with Marc Jackson who was brought in to provide "toughness" and Linton Johnson was considered a "gem" by Rod Thorn. The Nets signed Jeff Mcinis who was brought in to "backup" Jason Kidd. The Nets also had veteran Cliff Robinson, the Nets rounded up the bench with guys like Scott Padgett and Lamond Murray. So with this new found "depth" the Nets were ready to "compete for a championship".
However just like in season's past the Nets started off slowly, they dragged to a 9-12 record. However a big overtime win over Denver sparked a ten game winning streak. That streak was snapped by the Spurs, the Nets would be borderline average through the all star weekend and had a 32-28 record until the Nets reeled off an impressive 14 game winning streak and in the process beat some quality teams like the Lakers, The Mavs, The Pistons, The Suns, The Wiz, The Grizz and the Heat. Before losing to Lebron and the Cavs. The Nets ended the season with a 49-33 record and won its 4th Atlantic Division title in five years, and had the fourth best record in the east.
In the first round they would face the 42-40 Indiana Pacers a team that was very much considered dangerous. The Nets would lose the first game, however they would break even to tie the series 1-1. In Indiana the Nets were able to split the two games before winning two straight to win the series in 6 games. In this series former Net Anthony Johnson torched his former team and outplayed Jason Kidd.
In the second round the Nets would face the Miami Heat a team that bounced them from the playoffs the year before. In game 1 the Nets stunned the Heat with a 100-88 win, and some believed that the Nets could potnentially upset the Heat, unfortunalely the Heat would win four straight to eliminate the Nets for the second straight year. After game 1 Clifford Robinson was suspended for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. In the closing game 5 the Nets had a chance to force a game 6 but Dwayne Wade stole the ball beofore Vince had a chance to attempt a shot as the final buzzer sounded.
After another disappointing season the Nets were confident that 2007 would be better.
