Prolific Scorer : Hedo Turkoglu's Trade Value at an All-Time High?

Posted 09-18-2008 at 07:29 PM by Prolific Scorer
I tend to think so.

Now let me start off by saying that I myself (along with pretty much the whole city of Orlando, too) was very appreciative of the things Hedo brought to the table last season, having a career year and was a intrical part in Orlando's regular season and postseason success (even tho he did lay a few eggs in the Playoffs), and was well worth the 7 million dollars he made as well. I'm just not a big fan of 2nd/3rd options who play with a dominant center who have career years at 29 years old. Not saying he would or wouldn't fall back down to Earth next season, just not willing to take a chance if he can be moved for the right price.

With the drafting of PG/SG Courtney Lee, the FA signings of PG Anthony Johnson and SG/SF Mikael Pietrus, Hedo becomes a lot more expendable IMO because we've brought in guys who can help carry the playmaking load along with Nelson that we will be losing with Turkoglu.

I know for some teams it creates certain matchup problems, but I don't think I can go another season watching Rashard Lewis start at the 4, and watching us get abused on the boards like we did last season. Because lets be honest, Tony Battie is in his 30's now and is just a few wrong footsteps from being back on the list.

But if Otis Smith and the Orlando Magic are trying to make power moves to contend for a championship, the time to trade for a quaility starting PF is now.

Now i've heard a few ideas from different people / sources, and some names that could be in some intresting situations next year with contract / playing time, and Hedo's contract is decent (7 Million) and is out in 2010.

Lets make it happen Otis

Nice. I agree i mean Hedo imo is nothing more then a 6th man at best and there are a lot of teams out there that do need some bench scoring and the magic need a power forward so i say they need to make a trade ASAP before the magic get exposed again.

Which power forward would you want for him? I'm sure a lot of teams would love to have Hedo on their team after the season he had last year, but I don't know how many teams would want to trade a quality starting power forward for him. Who is your definition of a quality PF?

A quality starting 4 would be along the lines of Udonnis Haslem, David Lee, Charlie V, Rasheed Wallace (trade with detroit where they get their playmaker in Hedo), Sean Williams / Josh Boone (to a lesser extent) , Nick Collison, Boris Diaw , Chris Wilcox just to throw out some names.

Not saying we could deal straight up, but if we could get a 3rd team maybe, i'm sure all of these guys could be had if the deal is correct.

Nice write up, but Im not really a big fan of dealing Hedo right now unless we get a borderline All-star type player back in return. That means ppl like Aldrige, DWest, Sheed, etc.. which i dont think is likely at Hedo's age. I think we should wait more until around the deadline before we make any kind move because we might be able to get better value for him then.

Hedo is more than just another SF for us. With Meer still developing and given his size, Hedo is our primary playmaker. So getting a guy like David Lee, UD, Josh Boone, etc, would be cool, but at the expense of Hedo we might just be taking one step forward and then two steps back... The type of PF we migh be able to get for could bring us maybe 3-5 more rebounds a game, but then we would probably lose about 10ppg & a playmaker & mismatch maker, for someone else would be alot less versatile and probably clog the lane for Dwight & would be alot easier for the standerd opponent to match up with.

I see where your coming from, but I think the only we trade Hedo now is if we find out we wont be able to extend him next year. Otherwise, I just dont there's good enough value out there for him right now that's worth him for even if his value is high.

Good article. I've really liked Hedo last season, but your team still need a PF, badly.
Just for thoughts... PF ideas? Kirilenko, Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion (would Miami deal with Orlando?)...

Hedo was a borderline All-Star last season, but I certainly wouldn't be suprised to see him fall back down to Earth this year.

Like I said Blue Magic, the additions of Anthony Johnson and Courtney Lee help us in the setting up the offense and the playmaking department that we will be losing with Hedo, while we'll also still have our shooter in Rashard who can bury the 3, and hell with Turkoglu gone it will even give JJ a legit shot at seeing the court on a consistant basis.

Really as a roster move, dealing Turkoglu just makes sense for the reasons I posted above, plus the fact that we're still very shallow at the PF/C position and need to solidify our frontcourt. Because like I said in the blog and earlier, we got murdered on the boards and I just can't go another season screaming at the television because teams are getting 2 or 3 chances at possession because we can't secure a defensive rebound outside of Dwight Howard.

Just pray that Smith is smart enough to refuse offers that include Zach Randolph...

Although I might sound like a complete idiot..

I believe Zach Randolph wouldn't be THAT bad of a move

Rich would never go for it anyways (I think)

It would stunt Howard's development - I can promise that at the very least.

Teams wouldn't be able to double down on Dwight as much, plus we'd be a heck of a lot better rebounding team.

I know Zach has a rep as a ballhog/cancer, but he's never been in a winning situation.
