Everything Comic Books: January Edition

It's a New Year (well it will be when some read this), which means resoultions, new semester of school, heading back to work.. and another 365 days until you can get drunk watching the ball getting ready to drop.

Fun? Sure!

The best thing that comes with a new year is the new adventures and stories that are bound to be told in the medium of comic books (maybe there's a little hyperbole there).

So with it being a new year, what are you looking forward to the most? Be it a storyline, writing team taking over a new book, long delayed issue?

As 2006 was the year that brought me back to comics, I have this feeling in my gut that 2007 is going to be an even better year.

Re: Everything Comic Books: January Edition

Some Marvel itmes:

I think that Joss Whedon taking over one of my favorite series in Runaways will end up being an amazing thing, though some may disagree. The 4th arc of Whedon's Astonishing X-Men should also be very good. Ah and let us not forget that early in the New Year, the Civil War will be over.

Spidey is going to be back in black, futur will have another Bendis book to hate with Mighty Avengers which may have the lamest roster ever, Brubaker's Rise & Fall Of The Shiar Empire concludes this year (and I do love those galactic X-Men stories), did wacky Canadians send a million letters to Marvel because we've got a new Alpha/Beta/Delta/OMEGA FLIGHT albeit featuring American superheroes (booo!), and of course sometime in late 07 we should get the first issue of Ultimates 3.

And I'm still curious to see what BKV will be doing after he's done with Runaways and Y: The Last Man.

Re: Everything Comic Books: January Edition

I honestly wonder if BKV will be able to keep his workload down. It'll be interesting to see.

What I'm really looking forward to is the buildup to the conclusion of 52. I haven't read any comics (outside of trades) in a month so I'm really really really looking forward to this. It should be HUGE.

I finally signed up for midtowncomics (no more comic shops!) so I think things are going to be great for me. I'm excited. I'll also start picking up some trades every few weeks.. that new 100 Bullets trade has me fiending. And I think I found a new TPB addiction in Fables.

Problem with all these comics though, I need to start thinking about storage. I saw in a magazine once these comic boxes that let you pull it out like a drawer, instead of opening it via the top.. but I can't find them anywhere. If anyone can help me on that behalf, I'd really appreciate it.

Re: Everything Comic Books: January Edition

My resolution is to pare down my pull list for awhile so my pocket book can rest.

Bendis' Ultimate Spiderman is amazing. Sorry I had that spat of hate. The clone saga is easily the most vile thing done to Parker yet. And his handling of Parker/Kitty was wonderful. Even though the art sucks, I hate some of the writing, and I was initially very angry about Gwen, the book is easily a must read right now. Civil War and Ultimates are going to end this year supposedly.

Fun times.

You don't like the art?!

What in the world?

I think Mark Bagley was born to draw Spidey.

He's not terrible, but all his people seem too angular. Like their joints are at perfect 90 degree angles and such. Pointy Parker instead of Puny Parker.

I don't read a lot of DC stuff besides the big stuff like Infinite Crisis and some Batman/GL/Flash stuff, so I haven't read any of 52. I'd really need to buy a bunch of trades to catch up on people like Adam Strange, The Question, etc. And what's with DC's trade schedule. Minus the Wildstorm/Vertigo stuff their trade collection is really awful. I'm a big fan of the way Marvel sets up and releases their graphic novels and the Essentials Library is an amazing purchase. 25-30 comics for 10 bucks on Amazon. True, it is in black & white and printed on low-quality newspaper but if you want to read the old stories, it really helps out. Masterworks which has only 10 issues or so but is in color and on high-gloss paper is a nice option as well but most of them are 40-50 dollars.

See I grew up on Bagley so he's my favorite, his style is a little different with Ultimate Spidey compared to his old work. I still love it though.

See that's the great thing about "52" you really wouldn't need to have prior knowledge about the characters involved. The only main characters during this series that I was really well versed in (and I'm using that loosely) is Booster Gold and Skeets. They did a great job of making all the characters and storylines accessible, reading Infinte Crisis reading wasn't needed. In early issues they actually recounted some of what happened to lead up to everything, and also some brief background.

It's easily the best series I've read. futuristxen said they won't release it as a trade, but I find that hard to believe.. it'll be out eventually but they'll wait. Since there's a good amount of people buying from week to week. I mean, I don't watch TV shows so basically I use "52" as my replacement and I doubt there's been a TV show as consistently entertaining as this.

Yeah, it's something that a lot of people complain about. With how well structured and organized DC's ship is they probably should have more tpbs than they do from their base universe. I think it adds to the prestige though, I believe with regular series only the great runs should get tpbs. It seems like Marvel collects everything even the crap runs.

If you're not up on some of these titles check out the first issues for free on DC's official website, and you might become an addict.

newsarama.com also has #1's for a bunch of Image books.

Read the lastest Justice Leage of America by Meltzer. I can't decide which is better this or Justice Society. Both books are so good. Black Lightning is back! And Red Tornado is cool.

I hope Batwoman doesn't die in 52. She should get her own book.

hey comix geeks, are there any comic book characters who have mastery of Light (like say Storm's mastery of Weather in X-Men)?

Dazzler.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dazzler

Dr. Light

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_...rthur_Light%29

The latter of the two is truer of what you asked, the first is simply what came to mind for me.

Re: Everything Comic Books: January Edition

Not very.

I mean Dazzler was a Disco singer who's mutant power was to turn sound energy into light blasts. She was created as a co-promotional act between Marvel and this record company.. I guess they thought Disco was going to last forever.

Dr. Light is a character I'm only loosely familiar with so I couldn't say whether he's cool or not.

Only other character I can think of who's powers involve light is Jubilee who was basically born with the outstanding mutant power of.. making fireworks emit from her fingertips. Must be amazing to know you're a part of the next stage in evolution and your powers practically amount to being a parlor trick.

Re: Everything Comic Books: January Edition

after reading the wikipedia article on Dr. Light it seems that his entire character is actually a joke amongst DC Comix makers to see just how pathetic they can make a supervillain. (they went so far as to have him be defeated by a gang of children who didn't have any super-powers).

anyways the reason i ask is because it just seems it would be cool to have a comic book character who incorporated light into what they were doing. neither of these seem to tap that potential IMO.
