Re: Random House and Penguin merge
Two pretty big companies.
I know I've switched to mainly audio books, which is sad for many reasons, but with frequent 6 hour drives its just convenient.

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
I can see why Penguin would want the merger, the eBook era has to be killing them. (Penguin Classics used to be their big gravy train, but in the digital age who needs the Penguin versions of public domain books?)

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
I still buy from Penguin, they keep coming up with cool ideas that get me to invest in hard copies.
I think I just prefer something tangible to flick through.

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
In the last month I've downloaded more than 200 books that I never had access to before because in the days of dead trees they didn't sell enough to warrant Penguin Classics treatment. And once you get used to reading on your iPad/lesser tablet there's no going back. I used to be a huge Penguin customer because my tastes run to 19th century literature, but no more. And I don't think I'm unique in this.

I accept that one day I will mock the child that has sat here and typed these words, until that day comes, I'm sticking to my guns.

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
I like having a physical copy as well, but in reality we really do need to start cutting out shit like that environmentally.

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
this is a really weird thread title when you don't know book publishers off hand.

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
Well, they've been handling ebooks extremely poorly. They made it impossible, for example, to actually download Penguin ebooks from a library (which the library purchased, and which used to be readily downloadable for a 2 week period) onto one's iPad. It claims you need a cable connection, but then informs you that you don't have a device that is capable of supporting a download that way... I called and left them a pointed message, but of course they have no answer.

Re: Random House and Penguin merge
though profitable because of low back end costs classics are a small part of Penguin's business - they're a massive house with many imprints
in any event this has as much to do with leverage in negotiations with amazon as anything including theadvent of digital reading |
