Re: Book(s) Recommendations
The Book of the Long Sun isn't so far removed from that, if you look at them Wolfe sneakily does something that slips by most. We the readers are the primitives in the first series, but we become less primitive as the series progresses (and we understand the universe of the Solar Cycle more fully) as the science becomes more accessible to us. I always appreciated that little joke of Wolfe's.
I enjoy The Book of the New Sun the most not for its fantastical treatment of science but because I find Severian more compelling than Patera Silk. The last series, Book of the Short Sun, is, in my opinion, nearly as good as Book of the New Sun, mostly because Silkhorn is a fascinating narrator.

Re: Book(s) Recommendations
I think it has more to do with his close attention to and manipulation of words in the first cycle - I think he put more work into it and that it's better written than the subsequent cycles
the language in the first cycle is more intricate and more intensive - the whole 'translation of a future language back into our english' trope is at play he pretty much abandoned that post severian (btw - nice to have someone to discuss this with, I've come across few Wolfe fans - not sure why he's never quite broken big) Last edited by e-monk; 10-11-2011 at 06:07 AM. |

Some slightly older series also mentioned often are Robin Hobb - Farseer and Glen Cook - Black Company

ESPN: These Guys Have All the Fun
The only time I can put it down is when I'm on the clock. I've been reading it on all my down time at home. The ridiculous levels of debauch in Bristol are incredible, the ways they scammed money to get financing early on, the hilarious juvenile behavior of a mid-20s Dan Patrick, Chris Berman talking about how he became who he was (and the way people upstairs couldn't stand his schtick and the way he stood out)... So much cool stuff. I'm only 250 pages in, just hitting around 13 years into the station's history. The next 20 years take up the last 550 pages. Can't imagine it'll be any less compelling. Check it out, definitely.

Re: Book(s) Recommendations
And now 20 years later there isn't a single person in the world who can take Berman for more than a minute. I remember liking him when I was about 10 though.

Re: Book(s) Recommendations
And yet you remember his schtick. Maybe you're sick of it but the way he calls things, you remember it. Thinking of ESPN in some way is what ESPN wants.

Chris Berman is the gateway anchor.

Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White. Interesting as an artifact of the early mystery genre.
Sent from my iPad using VS Free 'cause I'm a cheap prick and refuse to pay VS for the work I do

A.M Homes - This Book Will Save Your Life
The book centers around a man that has lost his connection to the 'world'. It was a fun and fast read. Pick it up.

Re: Book(s) Recommendations
The newest Dresden Files will be out in just over two weeks.
I'll be getting it the day it comes out.
