BOSTON, MA (March 4, 2005) -- The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent guard Gary Payton. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Payton, who was waived by the Atlanta Hawks March 1, 2005, has appeared in 54 games for the Celtics this season, all starts, averaging 12.1 points, 6.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.8 minutes per game. The nine-time All-Star was traded to Atlanta, along with Tom Gugliotta, Michael Stewart and a future first round draft choice, in exchange for Antoine Walker on February 24, 2005.

I don't get why Atlanta made this deal when they could have got more for Walker.
It's basically Walker for a 1st round pick.

this deal now, was pretty much an all win situation, but i hope that we still see alot of delonte and banks now that gp is back again. not that it's a bad thing of course..

Do you know of any other offers that they got? I don't htink that I've heard of too many other ones that would be better than a first rounder.

You have to think about it really. Walker was gone after this season. At least they got a first round pick out of it with the trade. It's better than nothing for the Hawks.

Yeah, I guess its good for the Hawks. Is GPs contract up next year? If it is they'll have a lot of cap space.
I think the Celtics will win the division now that they have Walker and Pierce back together and GP at the point.

Doc said he wouldn't play him tonight, but I have my doubts. If either of the rooks get in a minimal amount of foul trouble and the team needs settling down - I think we'll see GP.
I think the fact that we are playing Charlotte has a lot to do with the decision. My guess is that if it were Philly - GP would start.

Yeah, GP's contract was expiring from what I know.
I have a question though for those that know more about the contracts and all than I do. When we signed GP today, are we only signing him for the rest of the year, or are we able to sign him to a longer deal, like the 2 year deal we were talking about earlier?

Only one year, we signed him to the Low Level Exception (1.4 million).
We're we able to sign him for more then that? I think so, but that would be at the minimum, basically even less then what we gave him now. I don't think he'll be playing the rest of his career for the minimum...
