Re: The Ultimate Tommy Point: Pierce Could Be Best Celtic
I understand what Tommy is saying. It is a difficult topic to bring up because we have had so much success as teams in the past. Paul doesn't have the supporting cast to win, therefore he shouldn't be punished. I am not saying he is as good as Bird or anything, I'm just saying if Bird had this garbage around him it would be pretty difficult to make the playoffs. Pierce can't accomplish the same things that Bird did because of his teammates. One thing that I think is important to consider though, is that Bird did make teammates better, it was obvious he almost always made the smart play. The other Celts on the team didn't necessarily make all star games or the hall because of their stats but because of the way they played and won within the system. Comparing Pierce's stats to Bird's stats and accomplishments is like comparing apples to oranges. The only way to evaluate these guys is subjectively which is always a dangerous proposition. Bird won, Pierce hasn't. Pierce, like Heinsohn said, is so versatile he can do anything. I don't know how I feel about the comparison, but I'm fairly sure that Bird is a top 5 player of all-time, and Pierce isn't. Pierce is one of the most underrated players in the L though, and for him to have to spend his whole career (this far) just having to give his all to try to make the playoffs is disappointing. Pierce seems to step up the bigger the game gets, so I would LOVEEE TO SEE THE GREEN IN THE FINALS. Then all this opinionated talk could turn into some useful answers. 2 different eras, 2 different teams, 2 different players. Bird and Pierce are unreal.
