"Assess the Celtics' moves on draft day"
Quote:
BOB RYAN
Globe columnist
One undersized point guard was beaten out by . . . Tony Parker? Chauncey Billups? Jason Kidd? Ah, no. Steve Blake! And he has more personal, troubling baggage than a 747. (His entourage alone will require two sections at the new Gahden). The other undersized point guard cannot shoot, and that includes free throws. His college coach is said to be throwing a party now that he's sure the kid isn't coming back. The veteran shot-blocker they got is 33 and gets hurt about every other day. The guy they officially drafted (Randy Foye) might very well be the next Joe Dumars. Poor draft? I wish. And Allen Iverson is next? Take me now, Lord. Please. Grade: F-minus.
PETER MAY
Globe basketball writer
For the time being, I'll give them a gentleman's B. To me, getting Raef LaFrentz's salary off the books was the best move of the evening. Now if they route that money into Allen Iverson's portfolio, the grade drops like a stone. And how is it that Danny Ainge, who says he values shooting as much as anything, can sit there with a straight face and slobber over Rajon Rondo, a point guard who shoots 58 percent from the line? Maybe Sebastian Telfair is better than any of the point guards available. But is he better than Randy Foye? Danny's drafting has been excellent to date. Until proven otherwise, he gets the benefit of the doubt.

Re: "Assess the Celtics' moves on draft day"
Bob Ryan is an utter and complete moron. Watch him on PTI sometime, the guy is like a slobbering drunk. Some pts. Bob.
1. We took on an injured Ratliff getting rid of an injured Lafrentz and one extra year of having to pay for a useless, hobbled player. A+
2. Rajon Rondo is undersized? Yes, the kid has to put on some weight, but he's 6'3 with big hands. We gave up a pick next year likely around 22 or so. B
3. Telfair. Once again leave it to the media to hype up that this guy has a lot of "baggage" and could be a "trouble-maker." He's a young kid and probably made a few stupid mistakes. Will Foye be better? Time will tell. Still, it was worth it to get rid of Dickau and one extra year on Raef's contract to make this happen. INC, but leaning towards A.
4. Leon Powe. A-. Supposedly a very good 2nd round pick up.
5. Allan Ray. B alone for just getting the guy to participate in the summer league.
Sorry, Bob, but put down the Jack for a minute and clear your head.

He's 6'1" and there will be good players available at the Cavs' pick next year.

Is Lafrentz really that injury prone? He's listed as having played all 82 games last year. Regardless Theo is a better player when healthy (which is not often anymore) in my opinion. All in all a wash impact-wise imo, except Lafrentz is one year longer (thus advantage: Boston).

He had an incident where he had a gun on the team plane. He claims he grabbed his wife's bag by accident and it was her gun. Fishy to me, but not exactly damning. Other then that he came off as a really great kid, and I think you'll be happy with him. I swear, just because he's from NY the media is convinced he must be trouble.

Re: "Assess the Celtics' moves on draft day"
Ryan covers every sport on the planet - how much did he actually watch Randy Foye play? It's funny how some people don't want to talk about the talent and potential we have but have no problem talking about the potential of the guys we don't have.

Re: "Assess the Celtics' moves on draft day"
I liked Raef but hated his contract, freeing up that money is BIG. Telfair may or may not be a future superstar but I think he has the potential (there's that word again) to be something special. I don't like the Rondo deal and hope that he is trade fodder but if not then I'm going to hope DA is a better judge of talent than I am. Ratliff will be a nice tutor for Perk and Big Al if nothing else, and when healthy is a nice defensive presence inside. I can't honestly say that I know enough about Powe to comment on him but Ray struck me as a pretty nice player in the limited times I saw him play. I doubt that either of these guys will see minutes this year unless there are a rash of injuries but what did the C's have to lose by giving them a shot? All in all I think this was a pretty good bunch of moves.

Don’t waste your time getting all upset that the Celtics traded the rights to Randy Foye, the No. 7 pick in last month’s draft (Portland then dealt him to Minnesota for Brandon Roy).
The former Villanova guard, who the C’s had in for two pre-draft auditions, has been ripping through the summer league. Yes, this is still Vegas in July, but after outscoring Amare Stoudemire, 30-21, in a win over Phoenix, Foye was averaging 26.5 points on 54-percent shooting.
However, if the Celtics had kept the No. 7 pick, Minnesota would have taken Foye at No. 6. The Timberwolves had Foye rated second overall in the draft. The C’s had him slotted highly, as well, and Ainge reportedly looked at moving up to get him. . . .

Minnesota tanked to keep their pick [would've went to the Clippers if they finished outside the bottom ten]. Ainge is mad about that, actually [as we want the Clippers to get Minnesota's first ASAP so that we can get Minnesota's first two years after at the earliest].
