OT: Banks a Sun
Banks -- 5 years, $21 million - eager to back up Nash
Quote:
As an up-and-coming free-agent point guard, Marcus Banks could have found a team that was willing to guarantee him a starting job.
Instead, he told his agent, Michael Higgins, he wanted to play for the Phoenix Suns, who have two-time MVP Steve Nash in the same position.
"He thought I was crazy," said the 24-year-old Banks, who left the Minnesota Timberwolves to sign a $21-million, five-year contract with Phoenix. "I just felt it would be a great opportunity. We just looked at the best opportunity. I'm not a selfish guy at all. I don't mind playing behind Steve Nash."
It also helped that Banks lives in Las Vegas, an hour's flight away. He played college ball at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.

He'll excel in Phoenix.

Re: OT: Banks a Sun
He could do very well there. I do think the contract is a bit large for someone as unproven as Marcus is right now. Could be a great deal for Phoenix if he matures as a player.

The article mentioned that Banks turned down starting point-guard level money to play near Vegas.

Re: OT: Banks a Sun
Not sure he actually turned down starting PG offers - article states "As an up-and-coming free-agent point guard, Marcus Banks could have found a team that was willing to guarantee him a starting job." Seems like speculation on the writers part but maybe there was more too it. I agree though that for Banks that's big $$.

No, but the guy you admire did.
So Banks is once again a Sun (he played for the Rebel Suns, right?)
It's quite some money but I don't see how he can't be good down there. Look at the history of Suns players, look at the one-time awful Diaw.
Good for Banks though, just hate it to see that we gave up on him so soon. If he can learn from Nash (not a washed up vet like a guy we had two years ago) he'll be a good future piece along with Amare, Barbosa and Diaw.

No, but Banks >Scalabrine.
21 million is pretty sweet...
My guess is he will thrive. I felt that we made a mistake not keeping him.

Yeah, it's one of those incredibly obvious moves, a push the pace, attack the rim team with defensive issues signs a push the pace, drive & dish guard with great defensive ability. Defensively he's a huge upgrade on Barbosa (which is one reason they signed him), and now gets to hone his game behind Nash. Great move for both sides.

Re: OT: Banks a Sun
He's not selfish and wanting to start, he just wants more money and a higher chance of getting a ring. He can get all that in Phonenix.

Apparently, he's taking less money to play in Phoenix [which is close to Vegas, his home].
