Gomes to play the 4
Quote:
Gomes to play the 4
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff
WALTHAM -- Asked to learn the power forward and small forward positions last season, Ryan Gomes often felt like a college student, constantly cramming for exams. He had a lot of information to process in practice and before each game.
As his role expanded throughout the year, the information overload continued. The second-round selection (50th overall) juggled both roles sucessfully, becoming the most pleasant surprise of the season and starting 33 games. But this season, coach Doc Rivers would like to make the game a little simpler for Gomes.

Personally I think this is good, we don't have many other options at the four and this should space minutes out for Wally and Gomes (starters) and whoever backs them up.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
Gomes has apparently worked this offseason on becoming a natural small forward, but we need him as our starting power forward if Jefferson does not progress. I hope that Ainge doesn't seriously feel that Gomes is a legitimate power forward, though.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
gomes plays big enough to be a good pf...just because he is small doesnt mean he cant be a legit pf...gomes is what 3 or 4 inches smaller than jefferson yet he plays 3 or 4 inches taller than him...that makes gomes more of a legitimate pf than al to me

Re: Gomes to play the 4
Gomes is about the same height as Charles Barkley and he had a pretty good career as a PF
Personally I think that using Gomes as a 4 makes more sense than using a 2 such as West at the point. I don't mean that as a knock on West, I think he did an admirable job, I just think that the difference between the 3 and 4 is much less than the difference between the 1 and 2. Gomes' hustle and basketball smarts make him too valuable not to have on the floor at some position. Whether that position is the 3 or the 4 really doesn't matter as long as he does not become a liability and I don't think he will do that at either position.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
Let's not kid ourselves. Gomes' height, for one, is a deterrent in his ability to play more than 25 minutes at power forward. Gomes is not tall or strong enough to proficiently defend starting power forwards. He is not a strong post player or interior defender. He's a fine temporary starter, but he is much more adept at small forward with reports of his leaner body and improved quickness. Gomes may be our starter for quite some time, depending on Al, but he is not the answer to our power forward needs. He has sixth man written all over him, which is certainly not a bad thing.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
With what the Celtics have, this is ideal for them.
It may not be the best thing for Gomes, but for him to get minutes it's best for him to play that position. I don't see how much time he'd get behind Wally.
I don't think he'll be able to play there for a long term, but it's a quick fix the Celtics desperatly need at the 4.
EDIT: Also, I don't think his height is that big of a concern, I'm trying to think of teams that he could not play against, but I cannot think of more than two in the East where it would play sugh a big role.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
I love Gomes, and he can play the 4, but he's not the answer. But neither is Al Jefferson.
There, I said it.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
In a fast paced, run and gun offense, Gomes playing the 4 is brilliant. He going to be quicker than other 4's and he is going to be able to get a lot done. But he isnt going to be able to defend bigger PF's in the half court set. Not only that he doesnt have the inside game. I hope we wise up and see Wally isnt the guy we need here in Boston. Then we can move Gomes to the 3 and look for someone else to play the 4.

Re: Gomes to play the 4
Gomes is a PF, his game is PF, it doesn't matter what height he is. He had to WORK all summer on practicing being a SF because he's not one. David West had the same things said about him when he came out of college and he's doing pretty darn good for the Hornets and Shawn Marion played PF most of the past 2 seasons. Height is overated, it depends on how you play the game. I agree that I'd rather see Gomes at the 4 than West at the 1. Sir Charles was totally a PF didn't hear anyone saying he wasn't.
Gomes would be a great 6th man but we don't have another starting PF right now, Al is not there yet and I don't know if he ever will be. Gomes is our guy at PF.

Gomes doesn't have the inside game?
You need to take a look at tapes of Gomes dominating Okafor in college...
His game IS on the inside. He developed his jumpshot later on in his college career.
