Doc to get extension
This ought to be an interesting thread.
Source: C’s want Doc to stick around -- Extension in works
Quote:
Doc Rivers will have an opportunity to coach the Celtics [team stats] next year and beyond. According to league sources, the club is prepared to offer Rivers a contract extension following this season.
Rivers’ original four-year deal ends after next season, and he has stated he didn’t want to be in a lame duck position, though he did stop short of saying he would leave if the team didn’t extend his contract.
Now it appears that issue will be moot. While the salary figures and length of the new contract have yet to be discussed, both sides seem willing and eager to get something done.

Re: Doc to get extension
Not surprising really, I figured that Doc would get a "thank you for tanking" present from the C's. Now if they get Oden or Durant and the rest of the current team is healthy I figure it will be put up or shut up time for Doc. Blowing 20 point leads when you aren't trying to tank isn't going to get the job done.

Re: Doc to get extension
As I said last summer, so long as fans believe that Doc's all that stands between offal and glory, his job is completely safe. The minute people begin placing the blame on the penny pinchers in charge he's done.

Re: Doc to get extension
I was actually expecting this.
So I'm one of the last people to give Doc some praise, but with what he's worked this year, sweet Jesus himself would not be able to make this team be a playoff team.
Paul going down (and them shutting him down rightfully) is not going to get you a lot of wins.
Then Jefferson being out now (and at the beginning of the season), and Allen getting injured when he was coming into his own. Perk battleing an injury and Gomes not playing like he usually does after Pierce went down his first time.
West has also been injured for a long time of the season.
And last (and least) Veal (the Celtics were 0-7 at one point without him!) and Wally (net effect = 0).

Re: Doc to get extension
If we had a healthy team all season our record would be much better. Wally did nothing, our all-star player was out for a long period of time, Tony Allen was starting to get nasty and he went down and we've had various other injuries. I think this team is in late playoff contention if everything had fallen into place but it just didnt work out that way. If we had a healthy Paul Pierce, Al playing the way he has, and Tony Allen playing the way he was...we would be a pretty solid team.
But on a positive note..the young guys got a LOT of experience and everyone will be healthy next year. And all that lands us a 33% percent chance at Kevin Durant or Greg Oden.

Completely untrue, when he was healthy he was playing horrific defense forcing Pierce to cover the opponent's best wing scorer on a nightly basis, he was dribbling the ball off his foot and out of bounds under pressure, tossing up ill-advised bricks at the end of games. His injuries helped the Celtics.
That being said they were a 35 win team with Pierce, Durant or Oden would be a major boon, but if the Celtics don't land either of them, it's going to be a long year.

Re: Doc to get extension
I'm going to pop my Basketball Forum cherry here.
I've been against Tweedle Doc and Tweedle Danny for a long time now (as at least one other member of this board can attest), and this really puts us in a bad spot in the future. Doc came in with the reputation of a coach that could build a player's skill set and confidence. So far I've seen backwards growth from Rondo and almost every other young player has remained neutral. Jefferson is the standout here, but you have to figure one out of the first rounders would pan out eventually.
Under Doc's reign this team has progressively lost games, and I'm not looking forward to more of this. Sweet motherloving Jesus should be at least an assistant here, since we're going to need Sweet Jesus defending the post.
Pleased to be here though. And my mood will go as the following factors do: Danny and Doc getting fired, the Celtics making the playoffs in '08, and the ping pong balls bouncing favorably on May 22nd.

Please extend a warm welcome to one of the infamous chairchuckers. If we can get AllenCrashes posting here we'll really have accomplished something (and HRB is next).

Thanks, glad to be here.

Rivers, who has one year remaining on his deal, recently campaigned for a contract extension. According to a story in yesterday's Herald, he's going to get one. The story said the team was ready to offer Rivers an extension following the season, but according to a team source, no such decision has been reached, nor will one be until Ainge and Rivers have a chance to sit down after the season. When asked about the story, Rivers said, "I'm not going to say anything about it. I don't want to. This situation will take care of itself. We have a great GM and great ownership. I'm not concerned."

From the Boston Globe. Make the right call Danny. Don't extend. Fire.
Then, after that's done:
Wyc: Don't extend. Fire.
