NBA Dynasty- Boston Celtics '86 vs. San Antonio Spurs '07
I realize that Tim Duncan and the Spurs deserve a lot of credit for their many wonderful accomplishments. Spurs fans have a right to chirp. But their is no way that their "modern day" dynasty can ever match up to or hope to defeat our '86 Celtics.
Spurs would get a knod for youth, energy, and athleticism.
Tim Duncan would get his points and is their big gun super star HOF'er. Manu Ginobilli, Tony Parker are 2 very good All star level players, as Brent Barry and Michael Finley are well respected vetereans.
The Celtics were bigger, stronger, nastier, and deadlier from all around the court.
KC Jones and Gregg Popovich are both coaches derided for being "lucky" in the right place at the right time.
Think of the match up nightmares.
Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, Bill Walton, Scott Wedman, and Jerry Sichting would DESTROY this Spurs team.
Matter in fact it'd probably be a sweep.
How would they match up?
Tim Duncan would have the BIG 3 (Parish, McHale, and Bird) swarming him on dee.
DJ would stick to Parker like glue.
The only player who might be out matched would be Ainge, Ginobilli is a fierce old school player, but he'd counter him by shooting his threes.
A healthy Barry or Finley would rack up their points but so would the vaunted B-Team (Walton, Wedman, and Sichting)
I can even see Greg Kite putting his body and 6 fouls on Duncan driving him nuts!
Spurs would outrun the Celtics, but be brutalized in the paint!
Not to mention how crazy the atmosphere would've been in the old Boston Garden.

Re: NBA Dynasty- Boston Celtics '86 vs. San Antonio Spurs '07
I agree 100%
One advantage of my advanced age is that I grew up following the C's through the 70's on up and was lucky enough to see some of the best teams to ever play the game. To hear people talk about recent teams (even the Bulls of the Jordan era) as dynasty's to compare with some of the great teams of the past amuses me. Sure these are great teams in their era, and sure the players as a whole are more athletically gifted than most of the players of the past, but teams prior to the expansion of the league had the advantage of being able to put 3 or 4 superstars on the floor at a time and then still have another 3, 4, or sometimes 5 excellent players to surround the superstars. Good teams today are lucky to have one true superstar and the so-called dynastys usually have just two.
Teams today also are lacking in the fundamentals and the team concept that were vital to many of what I consider truly great teams of the past. The Spurs do excel in this area IMHO and that puts them far abovew most of the current teams, but I can think of a number of teams of the past that I think would mop the floor with them. In addition to the C's teams of the mid 80's how about the Lakers from the same period. Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Cooper, Scott, Rambis, etc. would give any of todays teams nightmares. How about some of the great Knick and Sixer teams too? And it's not fair to even mention any of the Cousy/Russell/Heinshon/etc teams. Give me old school basketball any day

All we need is for Munro to chime in and we'd have an old age home going on in here. I dont think its fair to compare the great teams of the 80's with the teams of today because of the whole salary cap issue. Those Celtics/Lakers wouldnt have the depth today that they used to have.

wats the point of comparing two teams in 2 difference era's of basketball. The spurs would destroy the celtics today and thats the bottom line.

This comparison is not fair. Back then they didn't had the cap rules we have today, so the teams with good management were able to gather a lot of talent without having to pay things like the luxury cap.
How about the spurs vs the celtics today ? This is a fair comparison. Same era, same rules.
