Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
Celtics should drop Doc Rivers and go for Jeff Van Gundy.
The reason being....
1) Trio consists of all 30+ experienced players that Gundy likes to coach.
2) Garnett fits Gundy's paint defense philosophy.
3) All 3 can play in slow half-court offense.
4) Celtics need to cover the holes left in the trade and Gundy's defense can cover those holes.
5) Celtics are in win-now mode and Gundy is always in that mode. He has always been more than willing to sell the future for whatever he can get right now.
6) He has taken his team to Finals in a pathetic Eastern Conference before.
7) Doc Rivers is... eh...inadequate.
Downside is that.....
1) Even with that explosive lineup, you could potentially be one of the most boring teams to watch with Gundy coaching.
2) You will have to deal with Gundy's doghouse.
3) Kiss goodbye to all your draft picks. Do you guys even have any left anyways?
4) Dont expect young players to get much playing time...you will be sporting a geriatric lineup for next couple of years.
There are some negatives but Gundy should be able to deliver the goods with KG-Pierce-Allen.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
I was thinking the same thing last night with bringing JVG in. But then I thought about the fact that the big 3 were brought on for their offensive potential together and JVG would potentially only waste that. I think Adelman could've been a great fit, but he's already with the Rockets. I think they'll at least give Doc a crack at it for a year anyways.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
Very good idea. JVG has proven that he can coach winning teams and with this roster I think he could go to the promised land.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
The Celtics should have dropped Rivers three years ago and replaced him anything that lives, so this isn't exactly news.
Plus I'd rather take Rick Carlisle.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
Carlisle would not be good for the Celtics. He micro-manages the offense far too much.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
On the brightside, Doc cannot possibly **** up the line-up too much. He isn't going to sit our big 3 and Rondo/Perk are the only real players at their positions.

I don't believe that Carlisle ever had a team like this one before.
The Pistons were great, but these are three star players.
He didn't have much in Indiana, but thanks to him the Pacers actually competed the past few years.

Doc can't **** up a rotation that a ten year old could make. I'd like to think that he's at least coaching on the high school level.

That's a pretty scary assumption.
I'm anti-van Gundy because the teams he coaches are so boring to watch. I agree with the idea that Carlisle micro-manages and that's not a good thing. If they insist on keeping Rivers, they should also insist he hires a defensive coach to help out with the end of the floor Rivers clearly knows nothing about.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
Actually JVG would be a good fit for these guys.
Those things you pointed out are all legitimate.
Although, Luther Head and Chuck both played for JVG as rookies and got playing time because they were focused and made minimal mistakes.
I can see Rondo getting heaps big playing time because he can defend with those long arms. Big Baby might have an issue getting in games, but he's the type of player that with one opportunity can do well and get himself into the rotation.
JVG's doghouse doesn't seem like it would be an issue with the players you have now. Are any of them slackers?
Also, after watching two seasons of JVG's Rockets I wouldn't say that they are necessarily boring if you like good fundamental basketball. If you like showboating and dunks, then yeah, his isn't the right kind of game for you.

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
Three coaches I'd rather see than Doc:
1. Bill Russell
2. JVG
3. Rick Carlisle
4. Avery Johnson (if somehow the Mavs let him go midway through the season, as I remember some pundits predicted after the 1st round knockout)

Re: Drop Doc Rivers for Jeff Van Gundy
Even though I dislike him, Larry Brown is available. Paul Silas [a formr player here], too.
