Re: Tony Allen to be Backup Point Guard, Celtics Fans Shudder in Anticipation

It's not a deal that could be made now, teams nearly never trade big men for back-up PGs. If it had happened then (as part of the Ray Allen deal) Boston would have had just the single hole on their roster to address. Head's openly available now that Mike James has taken his spot on the roster, so he'd still be a cheap pickup, and I wish they'd do it. But I suspect that the brass is convinced that Gabe Pruitt will be the starting point guard by next year. Or have faith that they can complete a deal for Charlie Bell or sign Chris Duhon.

If boston is worried about Rondo they can get Head for a future first rounder in a second.
For whatever reason (perhaps they're anticipating a summer deal or trade) the Celtics have decided that next year is their title shot season and they're not going to address their two big holes for the time being.

Why would he have to be better than Perkins to be his backup? Right now the 5 is a problem because Perkins still wastes too much time on goonery, which gets him in foul trouble quickly. Pollard will need a personal visit from 900' Jesus to be healthy enough to play more a couple hundred minutes this year. The 6'7" guys probably aren't great replacements, because you really want to minimize the amount of time that Garnett spends defending the post.
