Re: Boston Celtics have a trade exception?

I don't believe they do because 1. a traded player exception is generated one player at a time and 2. Boston absorbed Wally Szczurvy-Yack's trade kicker.

$12M Szczerbiak x (125%) + $100K = $15.1M

Two players can't be traded for one single player and generate a trade exception (unless one of those players could have been acquired with a separate exception.) Since Szczerbiak alone couldn't have brought back Allen's salary, we know that West was added to Wally to match salaries.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Ray Allen has a base salary of $16M but, as I understand it, has incentives that may be classified as "not likely to be achieved". At the time of the signing of his contract, those totaled $5M over 5 years. If they do fall under that criteria, Boston would have been good and, trade-wise, $16M was the count that they were going off of in regards to salary cap. If they weren't, though, it was even more unlikely there was any trade exception generated by the transaction.
