I think you might want to swap Havlicek and Bird, given that one was a swing forward and the other a SG/SF.

F Cedric Maxwell (I really wish Len Bias had never tried coke so that either he or Pierce were here)

G Rajon Rondo (I really hate leaving JoJo off the list)

Yeah I'm aware they both played SF but I wasn't quite sure who'd be better at SG. I just put Larry there cause he's the man. Probably should have Jojo on the bench over DJ as well.

EH probably has it right, although Rondo may need another season or two of all-star play to cement his status on the team. KG probably needs to play at a high level for another few seasons as well to unseat Parish or McHale.

A few seasons to unseat Parish or McHale? I like KG and he's done a lot of this team lately, but it would take another banner or two for him to unseat those guys.

If I was playing against other all-time teams in a tournament or something, probably this:

PG Bob Cousy
SG Paul Pierce
SF Larry Bird
PF Kevin McHale
C Bill Russell

G KC Jones
G John Havlicek
F Kevin Garnett
F/C Dave Cowens
C Robert Parish
F Tom Sanders
F Cedric Maxwell

Havlicek is absolutely a better Celtic than Pierce, but I think I like him better as a supersub coming in for any of the 3 perimeter positions as needed, with minimal lineup shuffling. He'd still get plenty of minutes and be on the floor for the final play regardless.

Bird will play the vast majority of the game anyway barring foul trouble, in which case Pierce or Havlicek could take his place no problem. So instead of worrying about a true SF backup, I'd rather just stack my big men. The Celtics all-time front line is pretty scary, and if nothing else it's more fouls against Shaq. KG could play some SF if it came to it (assuming we're talking about 2008 KG).

A shutdown defender like KC (or DJ) is necessary behind Cousy. That's also why I included Sanders instead of Heinsohn or Sam Jones or whoever, blasphemous as that may seem. There's only one basketball, but you can never have too much defense.
