higlighted matchups for tuesday, january 18th

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT ALABAMA. This is a HUGE game for both teams. Both probably feel they are good enough to make the pod system, but the one thing lacking from both resumes is an abundance of quality wins. This is a chance for both teams to pick one up. Mississippi State looked terrible in the first thirty minutes on the road at Tennessee. This is going to be a more hostile environment against a better team, so they need to step up to the plate. Bama is coming off a big road win against Arkansas. A win here for either team would give them a really nice boost.

-WAKE FOREST AT FLORIDA STATE. Expectations were somewhat high for Florida State this year, and they have really not played as well as many expected them to. Still, the Noles can be tough to beat at home, but Wake Forest is tough to beat pretty much anywhere. They are playing their best basketball of the season right now, are one of the best teams in the country, and just came off a huge and decisive win against North Carolina. They need to get past it and focus on winning this game on the road though.

-PURDUE AT MICHIGAN STATE. Both these teams are coming off disappointing losses. Purdue has had a disappointing season all around. Michigan State has played pretty well, but just missed a chance to win at Wisconsin against a Badger team that is nearly impossible to beat at home. In the friendly confines of the Izzone, expect Michigan State to role in this one and remain on pace to finish toward the top of the Big Ten and get into the Cleveland pod.

-NORTHERN IOWA AT SOUTHWEST MISSOURI STATE. Northern Iowa lost over the weekend, and that really hurts their resume. They need to rebound from it and win this one on the road. Winning on the road in the Valley is not easy, but if they want to get in position to get an at large, they need to dominate this league. SMS has lost four games in a row. Northern Iowa does NOT want to be the team they end that losing streak to.

-PITTSBURGH AT SAINT JOHN’S. Pitt has been winning, but not convincingly and not against really good teams. Still, this is a conference game and winning it will keep them towards the top of the Big East for now. If they want to keep pace with Boston College and Syracuse, they cannot afford to drop games like this.

-GEORGETOWN AT SYRACUSE. Really big conference game for both teams here. Georgetown has been having a good season, but is still somewhat under the radar. That will change in a HUGE way if they knock off Syracuse tonight. Syracuse is still undefeated in conference, but they REALLY struggled against Providence over the weekend. This is an opportunity for the Orange to pick up their fourth quality win and improve to 18-1 on the season. They are having a tremendous year this year.

-OKLAHOMA AT TEXAS A&M. Texas A&M is unbeaten at home this season, and that includes a decisive win over Texas. They did struggle on the road against Texas Tech over the weekend, but they are a completely different team at home. Oklahoma is very good as well. I believe them to be much better than their ranking, so this is going to be a fantastic game. An Oklahoma win would really help them in the conference standings and keep the possibility of being placed in Oklahoma City alive. Texas A&M believes they can be a force in this conference, but they do not want to lose this game and fall to 1-3 in conference play. This is a big game for both teams who still believe they have something to prove.

-UAB AT TULANE. Mismatch in C-USA. UAB has won seven of their last eight and has been playing really well. Tulane shouldn’t give them too much of a challenge. Expect the blazers to win this, improve to 4-1 in conference play, and remain on pace to being an NCAA at large team.
