Re: Biggest possible first round upset?
I hate to say that Illinois could beat Va Tech, but it's possible because Tech is sort of a fluky team.Their guards are tremendous, but some times that team just does not perform. They should beat the hell out of Illinois, but they might not and if they don't it won't have much to do with Illinois.

Re: Biggest possible first round upset?
I'm not saying this willing to bet any money on it, but I could see #16 Jackson State beating #1 Florida. I'm not saying it to bet anything. I don't even have it in my brackets. I'm just saying that it could very well happen. A number 16 has to beat a # 1 at some point. In my actual brackets I have Oral Roberts beating Washington State.

WHAT!? I think LBSU, ODU, and Illinois have realistic shots at making the second round. Not too keen on Arkansas, but they ARE a decent team and USC is not one of the 20 best teams in the country. I mean, if Duke is overrated, what is USC? They are clearly not as good as the Devils.
I did know the stat about 9's having winning records, and since most pools give you a point for every upset you pick correctly, the rule is to take every 9 unless you have a compelling reason not to. This year the only 8 that deserves to get picked is Arizona.
I didn't know that winning 12's also win a majority of their second round games, but have incorporated it into my bracket with Long Beach State or Old Dominion depending on the bracket. Although I think part of the reason for that stat is that the best mid-majors still barely crack a 12 seed even if they are really good. Winthrop is an 11 and they are obviously top quality. So the 5's underestimate teams with some serious talent in the first round and then lose. Probably won't happen as much in the future as it does now.... or maybe 12's will be even better since the talent gap is closing.
Oh and for the record, everyone had Vermont over Syracuse. Taylor Coppenrath.

I don't think so man, look at Florida's non-conference games against teams like Jackson State. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Gators win by 50.

Re: Biggest possible first round upset?
Last minute change that I will almost certainly regret: Albany over Virginia.
ESPN is all over this, so you know it won't happen, but they convinced me. Plus I've really disliked Virginia and my best reason for not taking the Danes was "they aren't Vermont"

Re: Biggest possible first round upset?
I just want to go on record and say that my biggest upset is also Albany over Virginia. I've had it since they released the brackets, and I haven't gotten up enough nerve to change it - gut instinct and all.
I actually think the 13s have better shots than the 12s this season.
Sweet 16: Florida, Ohio State, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, Memphis, Georgetown, UNLV, Oregon, Wazzou, Pitt, TAMU, SIU, Texas, Tennessee, VCU
Elite 8: Florida, Ohio State, Kansas, UCLA, TAMU, Georgetown, Oregon, Texas
Final Four: Florida, Ohio State, Kansas, Georgetown
Georgetown over Florida in the Final - HOYA PARANOIA

Re: Biggest possible first round upset?
Well, Virginia is probably the worst 4 seed in recent memory, but Albany is still Albany - a week 13 seed that lost by 30 plus to (gulp) UConn this year.

I have Jackson State beating Florida If they actually pull it off, I will have bragging rights for all eternity.

Yeah, it's crazy how much I got flamed for making these comments all year.
