is this based on how you would have them right now or are you projecting this with predictions as to what will happen at the end of the season?

2 things....

a.) Dayton in as of now? They're under .500 in conference.

b.) I understand UW and IU as 6 seeds...but then why such a high seed for Michigan St.? If the other 2 are 6's...MSU is at best a 5.

Nice work though, JN...I can't disagree with anything else.

Right now... although I projected a few teams that are under .500 in conference to get at or over .500, those being Dayton and Ole Miss... if they finish below .500 in conference. they would not get in.

a) Fair point. I usually would never include someone below .500 half way through the conference season, especially from a non top 5 confernce.

But there 4-5 record is deceiving, and I expect them to go 9-7 or better.... first off 5 road games, 4 home games, against teams with an average RPI of 82. There next seven games, the average RPI is 122, and they have four games at home, and there away games are against crappy opposition.

I sort of broke no my projection rule, but in this case, I had to because they have:
3 top 50 wins
6-4 vs top 100
15 RPI

If they do what they are supposed to, and play decently they will get in.

b) As for Michigan St... never thought of it like you did, I just took them as the big ten leader.... I did rank them as the last #2 seed.

Why so much hihger then IU and Wisconsin? The committee usually values top 50 records alot.

MSU is 5-1 vs top 50
Wisconsin is 2-4
Indian is 1-3.

That's the main reason for the big separation in there rankings. Michigan St would have to win the Big Ten to sustain that seeding.

Perhaps they could have been a 3 seed, maybe below Stanford?

b.) Those top 50 records are very noticeable...I should've known that was going to be your response.

I still put a team like Xavier ahead of State though...Xavier spanked co-Big Ten leader Indiana on a neutral court.

Props to you for giving that last 1 seed to UCLA over UNC...

UCLA is a vastly superior team.

Re: My First Bracket for the year (as of Feb 9)

An 8 seed seems pretty high for Maryland. We touched on it in another thread, but I'm still unsure if they'll get in when it's all said and done. They're likely to be sitting at 19-12 or 20-11 with an RPI in the high 40s or high 50s. They have only one top 50 RPI win as of now, and their only opportunity to pick up another will be against Clemson in which they'll probably only be a very small favorite in.

Don't forget that they play in the best conference in America (well that is according to the RPI... whether it it "real" or not is certainly debatable).

Remember last year when I jumped on the Arkansas bandwagon on selection weekend when hardly no one else did... the SEC was not viewed as a strong league by the media but the RPI said it was the best.. the committee sometimes pays alot of attention to that stuff.

A fourth place record in the "top" conference is going to get you a top 10 seed.

Re: My First Bracket for the year (as of Feb 9)

The ACC may be #1 in RPI, but I think the committee will understand that it isn't the best.

I gave Arkansas an 11 seed in my final bracketology last year, for what it's worth.

Maryland's RPI numbers aren't very good right now, and they still have four road games left in conference. Guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

Re: My First Bracket for the year (as of Feb 9)

I think we can all put Dayton on the bubble...

With a home loss to Duquense last night, they now drop to 4-6 in conference...damn shame, coming out of the non-conference schedule they were 12-1...they almost have to run the table the rest of the way, and then pick up a game in the conf. tournament.

Re: My First Bracket for the year (as of Feb 9)

dayton's had it tough with the injury bug, then again with chris wright back soon, i don't know if they wouldn't be one of the favorites to win the a10 tourney.
