Alright please tell me the last time Pitino, Olsen, Bo Ryan, Jim Calhoun, Jim Boeiheim, Coach K etc won a national championship. Calhoun missed the tournament last year and loses in the first round this year to a team that was simply inferior in talent to his team. Boeheim hasnt even sniffed the tournament in the last two years. Why did I bring that up, because these guys have talented teams loaded with All Americans but still havent gotten the job done? I dont see anyone calling out their coaching ability, at least not on here.
|
Boheim's last National Championship was 2003, Roy Williams' last National Championship was 2005. Is that really that much of a difference? Don't forget that Boheim beat Roy Williams to win his NC too.

Another silly arguement. How did Matt Doherty do with the same team? Having talent on a team doesn't mean zilch if you cant get them to play. Its interesting that Self's Kansas teams have been loaded ever since Roy has gone but he hasn't done squat with them. Speaking of which, hows Matt doing with recruits nowadays, heck anyone know what team he is coaching. I thought he was supposedly the mastermind behind all of UNC's star recruits, surely he should be able to continue with that wherever he is now.
|
Matt Doherty was never a great coach. He did a great job recruiting a National Championship caliber squad but he wasn't going to be able to take them over mediocrity. It's not really that much different from Ron Zook for UF football.

Crean and Pearl better motivators, oh alright, I don't recall their teams winning a championship. Maybe I am wrong, someone want to give me an update on that.
|
When you get angry your arguments don't make sense. So they've been coaching a much shorter time than Williams, but it works against them because they haven't won a championship yet? Bruce Pearl has only been on the big stage at Tennessee for three years, and we've already seen what he's done on the DII level and then later at UWM. What he's done for Tennessee shows he's on his way.

Roy has 47 NCAA tournament wins, please dont chuck that up on luck. The guy is one of the best coaches in America, don't try and act like he is getting by because of his players, that arguement can be used for any of the big schools with good recruits.
|
I think what we're saying is a lot like his mentor Dean Smith, this dude finds a way to win less championships than the talent he accrues suggests. This doesn't make them bad coaches but it does mean that there is room for criticism.

Re: Davidson as a 7 Seed is Insane
Matt Doherty was a crappy kindergarten teacher and the UNC chancellor/AD were spineless jellyfish.

That is probably the dumbest thing you've ever said, HB. This is a guy who's won four national championship over here at UW-Platteville. Sure, it's Division 3, but you don't do that, or have an 82% winning percentage by not being an excellent head coach. I'd like to have seen Roy Williams do that in his younger days.
Talented squads last year? No, not at all. Tucker was good, but not nearly as good as everyone made him out to be. They had no outside shooters last year other than Taylor, either, and he wasn't anything special. He coached them to a 29-4 record, and a #1 ranking because of defense. This year he's talent is even worse. They don't have a single name player on the team, and they get very shoddy point play from Hughes and yet these team is still one of the legit championship contenders because of, you guessed it, defense! Anyone who doesn't think that he's one of the best in the game is out of their mind.

Re: Davidson as a 7 Seed is Insane
Anyway. I was glad I was wrong about Davidson, as they provided some excirement and proved to be a worthy teams.... not they deserved a seven seed (they did not, I will stick by that... a ten seed was about right.. it's what they had earned).

Olsen '97, Pitino '98, Coach K '01 Boeheim '02, Calhoun '04. winning a ring gives you the benefit of the doubt. there is what 300+ teams in Division I, only a handful of coaches can say that they have won a chip, some like Calhoun and Coach K have won it multiple times. you shouldve added Billy Donovan to that list since you are blasting coaches that didnt make the tournament but have rings to prove disprove anything that you say. of all those coaches that you mentioned your only right on Bo Ryan.

Re: Davidson as a 7 Seed is Insane
Yeah, good point. I completely overlooked the Calhoun criticism.
