Bobcats sign Varejao to offer sheet?
It's from hoopshype so I don't know but the source is a brazillian website.
Quote:
Free agent forward Anderson Varejao has signed a three-year contract with the Charlotte Bobcats. The Cleveland Cavaliers have a week to match the offer.
"Charlotte's proposal was good, and it makes me feel better knowing that I will be allowed to play for the (Brazilian) team in the Pre-Olympic next year." said Varejao.
"Charlotte is a young team with talented players like Okafor and Felton and they are doing a good job" said Varejao. "I'm confident we will make progress in years to come and be one of the top teams."

If it's true it probably means he's going back to teh Cavs but if they don't match then we finally have another front court player

Am I correct in thinking that the most you can offer is the full MLE?

We're only like 3-4 million under the cap so I don't even know if we can do the MLE

hmm... RealGM says the Bobcats have their MLE, but I don't know how reliable that is. Needless to say, I don't think you guys signed him to the $10 M per year contract he was hoping for. I am pretty confident the Cavs will match.

Here comes the drama.

Re: Bobcats sign Varejao to offer sheet?
Quote:
The Bobcats figure to be offering the mid-level exception, which represents a first-year salary of $5.36 million this season. A player signing for the mid-level must sign for a minimum of three years, but the player can get an opt-out, making him an unrestricted free agent after two seasons.
If the Cavs match, that precludes the Bobcats and Cavs from doing a sign-and-trade that would exchange Varejao for Charlotte players. Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry has made it clear he intends to match offers for Varejao and a 3-year, mid-level deal actually represents less than the best offer the Cavaliers have made (at least 3 seasons with a total value in excess of $20 million, with no opt-out for the player).
So what's all this about?
An educated guess: Varejao wants to become an unrestricted free agent as soon as possible. The Cavaliers wanted to lock him up for longer than two years at an affordable price. The two sides can't come to a compromise.
So Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan, forced the issue by contacting the Bobcats. Charlotte general manager Rod Higgins has a history with Fegan. His former team, the Golden State Warriors, signed Fegan clients Troy Murphy and Jason Richardson to big contracts. Then the Bobcats acquired Richardson.
And this summer, the Bobcats successfully re-signed another Fegan client, Matt Carroll.
Varejao would certainly address the Bobcats' immediate need for help inside. He's an energy guy and a rugged rebounder.
But the chances of the Bobcats actually acquiring Varejao appear remote. At best, this likely becomes a favor for an agent and an effort to show the fan base that the front office is trying to do something about the lack of depth among big men.

From Charlotte.com
I guess we do have the MLE, I don't think we're over the cap though so I don't understand

Re: Bobcats sign Varejao to offer sheet?
This is actually a little surprising to me. Team GMs don't usually make offers to restricted free agents outright, it's almost kind of an unwritten rule among GMs not to mess with each other's RFAs.
Not that Ferry really minds, anyway. AV isn't locked up for too long, so he still has to maintain or increase his production for his next payday. And we get him for even cheaper than what we originally offered.

Re: Bobcats sign Varejao to offer sheet?
This is fantastic... if it works.
If Cleveland matches this is going to get ugly quick.

Re: Bobcats sign Varejao to offer sheet?
Wow all of Fegan's clients are overpaid.I thought he was an incompetent boob after the way he's handled this crap, but I guess he's succeeded in robbing NBA clubs in the past and just tried to snatch more than he could carry off.If I'm not mistaken we could offer Varejao slightly more than the MLE since we have capspace...something similar to what the Cavs were offering. This is a just a facesaving measure for Varejao and Fegan. They admit they screwed up without really giving up completely. It's a nice charade for any bobcats fans who might be gullible to think it's a legitimate effort too.

Let's just be honest, he's not going to be wearing a Bobcat uni, at least for the next 2 years
