Bobcats interested in Boykins

Quote:
Earl Boykins, one of the NBA’s most prominent remaining free agents, received a call on Thursday from Charlotte Bobcats ’ head coach Sam Vincent conveying interest in having the nine-year guard join his club. Boykins’ agent Mark Termini confirmed the call.

The Bobcats are 6-11 and have lost seven games in row coming into their Saturday night contest versus Cleveland. Boykins would give Charlotte much needed depth at either guard position as he averaged 14.6 points and 4.4 assists last season.

Boykins became an unrestricted free agent on July 1st when he did not exercise his $3 million option for the 2007-2008 season with the Milwaukee Bucks . The Eastern Michigan product averaged 23.2 points per game during an 11-game stretch for Denver when the club was without suspended players Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith.

A source says that it is unlikely Boykins would sign for anything below the mid-level exception.

He wouldn't be much of a facilitator but he would definitely give us some firepower. Defense would be even worse though, and I'm sure we'd see a Boykins-Felton back court which would probably be the worst small ball yet. Definitly wouldn't want to pay full MLE either

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Boykins but I don't necessarily think this this a horrible move. Provided it is no more than a one year deal I think it could give us some extra firepower, although a Felton/Boykins backcourt would be a disaster defensively. (Also, I swear if Vincent tries to put Felton at the 2 spot I might just give up on the team for this year.)

Re: Bobcats interested in Boykins

That's probably what would happen. We'd end up with McInnis playing the 1,Boykins the 2 and Raymond playing power forward. It would just make too much sense for Vincent not to try it.
I'm not a fan of his at all.I really don't like the idea of a 5'7" shoot first PG...Especially when he's really not a pg.I'd rather have someone who believes in the forward pass playing the point.Of course we need help and we have to look at any help available.

Re: Bobcats interested in Boykins

Take this for what it's worth since Bonnell did say we weren't going to make an attempt at Varejao but he says we're not interested in Boykins

Quote:
No, the Charlotte Bobcats aren’t pursuing Earl Boykins.

An Internet report on realgm.com noted that Bobcats coach Sam Vincent had contacted point guard Boykins, who is without an NBA contract. The report suggested Vincent was expressing interest in Boykins signing with Bobcats.

Not so, Vincent says.

"It was more a reach-out than anything else,’’ said Vincent, who shares ties to the state of Michigan with Boykins.

Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins said that while he’s always evaluating available free agents, the team hasn’t discussed signing Boykins.

Certainly all this makes sense. Point guard is not a position of great need for the Bobcats. They need help inside – a big guy who can rebound and bang in the lane – far more than an undersized scoring point guard. Boykins is certainly an NBA player, and fun to watch, too. But I can’t picture him being such a priority that they’d cut another player and sign him to a guaranteed contract.

Re: Bobcats interested in Boykins

Point guard is a position of great need for this team,Bonnell(what are you blind?)...But Boykins is more like 5'3" shooting guard.
