By that logic the Sonics clearly would be the second best team. They took two games from the Spurs and almost took a third. And they did it missing an All-Star in Rashard Lewis and a top sixth-man-of-the-year candidate in Vladimir Radmanovic.
The Suns only took a game after the Spurs were up 3-0.
Now there are lots of other reasons to pick the Suns as the second-best team, but if being competitive with the Spurs is the barometer, then the Sonics are the second best team.
