Pacers in turmoil -- who will be available?

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dl...TS04/605050514

Nearly 10 hours before his sixth season with the Indiana Pacers ended, Jermaine O'Neal already was being asked if his stay in Indy might be over, too.

"Personally, I don't worry about those things," he said early Thursday. "My thought process is to go out and win. As for my future, it is what it is.

"Trades are made every year. I'm pretty sure, if you ask every other player, he's going to say he's not concerned about it. That's the nature of the game. It's like, if you get a younger stud in your position, they're going to trade you out. They're going to move you all. It's not a concern."

The Pacers say they have no intention of trading O'Neal this summer. If that changes, O'Neal feels he'll help his next team.

"I'm 27 years old and I feel like I'm one of the best in the league," he said. "So if I'm here, I'm here. If I'm not, I'm not. It's just the way it is. I feel like I'm going to make somebody's team -- if it's not the Indiana Pacers, it will be somebody else -- I'll make them a lot better."

O'Neal scored 21 points -- matching his series average -- in the season-ending Game 6 loss Thursday.

"I think the culture has to change,'' Anthony Johnson said plainly after the Pacers' 96-90 loss ended their season. "Sometimes there's a lack of professionalism and a lack of understanding. We need to give more effort to the team situation and not think about individual wants and needs.''

They didn't like each other. And this city, which seemed to regard playoff games as an imposition, didn't like this team. In a place that loves and reveres basketball, that's hard to do.

"There could be significant change or it could be moderate,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's hard to predict.''

No, it's not.

Goodbye, Jamaal Tinsley. Farewell, Stephen Jackson. So long, Fred Jones. We'll miss the hairstyles, Scot Pollard. And that might not -- should not -- be all.

Last season, the Pacers overcame the lack of manpower by coalescing around Reggie Miller and playing with a distinct sense of purpose. This season, with the Ron Artest mess and injuries, they never overcame.

"There was just so much negativity going around, it got contagious,'' said Jackson, who sounded Thursday like he was resigned to being moved elsewhere this summer. "Sometimes, people were talking about one another. The team wasn't always together. It was an up-and-down rocky year, and when the team isn't together, it's going to show out there on the court.

"The great teams get through (hard times). They stay focused and keep their minds on the goal, but as a coaching staff and as a team. It's not just in the locker room.''

Even before last night's game, Jermaine O'Neal sounded fatalistic about his future. The Pacers big man, mentally weary from two long seasons of frustration and controversy, allowed for the possibility he might not be a Pacer much longer.

"No matter what has happened, if an organization is tired of you, they're tired of you," he said. "If they think they can get a better deal, it is what it is...

...Stephen Jackson said he won't mind if he's gone next season, and seemed to think the Pacers fans don't want him back, either.

"I don't need to be here as much as I get booed when I check in the game," he said. "It doesn't matter to me though. As long as I'm playing basketball and providing for my family and friends I'm cool. I won't be upset if I'm not here. I won't be happy if I leave. It's not my decision."

We've got two dejected Pacers here, one a big shooting guard, and one a skilled post player, who could really help to fill out our roster. I'd be extremely interested in both of them. Would Indiana be interested in trading within their division? We obviously have the young players, the draft picks, and the ability to absorb large salaries -- for the right player(s).

Skackson sounds like a good name for a vulture, doesn't it?

Jeff Foster, hopefully. Though apart from waiting till July and taking the whole cap hit, I can't see a way to get this done.

I personally want neither...JO's soft and injury prone, Jackson's a headcase.

Golden State would be a good trading partner for Indiana trying to deal J.O. a Davis/Richardson/O'Neal trio would atleast get them to the playoffs. That is, if Davis and JO could stay healthy

Jermaine would be a good fit if he doesn't come to outrageously expensive (I'd consider giving up the Knicks pick, but probably not much else). When healthy, he'd be perfect for what we need. Only problem is that he's hurt all the time. As for Stephen Jackson, I'm not a fan of his style. I thought he did great with the Spurs, but then he decided to grow an ego.

I wouldn't be so extreme in saying that the Pacers ARE turmoil. However, that's just a philosophical debate that I don't have the academic background to get into.

Jeff has a bad back and bad hips. I really like him, but I don't know that he's worth trading for.

I don't know, it sounds like a lot of the players are unhappy there and are looking to move on. They've definitely got some issues to work through there.

Done.

Probably the closest analogy to the ideal would be a film director/producer who writes his own scripts, does his own camera work and somehow manages to film himself in action, as the protagonist or at least a main character."

I'm sorry -- we should offer them Tyson and the 16 as a starting point. I am sure that they would reject that. But I think that a trade can be brokered with Tyson and another player along with the 16 for J. Oneal.
