LA Times: LA turned down Wallace for Brown, Vladimir
Reinsdorf in essence killed any Gasol trade.
Quote:
With Gasol getting $49.4 million the next three seasons and Bynum's extension projected to kick in in 2009, the Lakers will go far over the luxury tax threshold, and this deal could cost $80 million in salary and tax over three years.
That's how they got Gasol. No one else would step up.
The Chicago Bulls, who eyed Gasol for years, could have offered P.J. Brown's expired $12.8-million contract and Andres Nocioni, whom Memphis wanted.
However, to put Brown's salary in the deal, the Bulls would have had to pay luxury tax on it this season, which owner Jerry Reinsdorf refused to do.
This wasn't the Lakers' only option. They could have had Chicago's Ben Wallace for Kwame Brown and Vladimir Radmanovic, according to an NBA source, incurring far less cost.
Moving Radmanovic's contract, which has three seasons worth $19 million left, would have meant the Lakers were taking on only an additional $20 million.
However, the Lakers thought Wallace was old and diminished, which was true. He's attitudinal, too, but I don't think he's as bad as he looked with the runty Bulls. He and Bynum might have been a devastating defensive tandem, but we'll never know.

Pax really handcuffed himself by signing Joe Smith. Smith & Noc's contract is nearly equal to Gasol's.

One might think that the Lakers only rejected the Wallace deal because Gasol was available, so if we took Gasol, then the Lakers would have taken Wallace....

Are you saying the Smith signing was a bad signing? I don't think many think that at all.

Honestly, Smith is a great value in terms of production for dollars. The Wallace and Grifin deals were much worse, IMO.

i think if we had Brown or Vlad, instead of Wallace we'd be in worse shape.
These guys are not the answer to our low post scoring. Insert Brown to do what? He can't score consistently. And The Bulls do not need another SF/PF that likes to spot up for the 3pt.
IMHO, no thanks.. id rather have Wallace on the boards.

here's an example:
You have a gorgeous girl that gives you all the oral sex and foreplay you want, but no actual sexual intercourse. Shoot, of course you get the glamour of being with a top notch girl, but you don't quite feel complete and satisfied. There's no shame "sealing the deal" with another girl who isn't as pretty, but heck.. at least you got to tap that booty.

The Lakers didn't want Ben Wallace and I don't blame them. He's obviously a shadow of the player he used to be and not nearly as valuable as a player of Gasol's caliber. Besides, Andrew Bynum is already the rebounder on this team, so why would they want to pick up a broken down Ben Wallace who plays the same position? That makes no sense at all.

If it stops you from making a trade for Gasol, it's a horrible signing.

I think your missing the point with Kwame Brown. His value isn't how he is as a player. It's his expring contract, which is a big one.

Exactly. Its hard to fault Pax at that point because he was just trying to improve the team. If you want to blame Pax (which I do), you have to look a bit before that, about how he failed to use PJ's expiring. IMO as soon as Pax knew he wasn't going to make use of that contract, he should have dealt that away for a contract with 1 year left, which would be expiring this year i.e. Kurt Thomas. Considering what Thomas was sent along with in a trade to Seattle (2008, 2010 1st rounders,....), I think its safe to assume we could have had our 2007 version of PJ Brown with Kurt in a straight up swap (maybe Bulls get a lil something on top?) and then of course, there'd be no need for Smith.

Oh.. gotcha.
How big is this expiring contract, and when does it expire?
Kinda shows that Bulls are absolutely tanking, and abandoning their "win-now" mode.
