Hanley looks at Brown's first day on the job
Can new assistant Brown help young bigs? No sweat
Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The sweat dripping from Mike Brown's face after the Bulls' shootaround Saturday showed just how hands-on of an approach the team's new assistant coach will take.
Brown will work with the big men, particularly assisting Pete Myers with the development of rookies Aaron Gray and Joakim Noah and second-year forward Tyrus Thomas.
like them,'' Brown said. ''They give you three different things; Aaron Gray's a big body, Noah has a lot of passion and is a very good offensive player, and Thomas is very athletic and explosive. Each of them brings something different to the table.''
What Brown, 44, brings to the table is experience from an 11-year NBA career -- including two with the Bulls when he was a teammate of general manager John Paxson (1986-88) -- and five seasons as a coach, including four in the NBA Development League as both an assistant and head coach.
''That's the main thing -- experience from playing, the experience from coaching in the [development] league helping young guys,'' Brown said. ''This is a new experience for them. They're dealing with the adjustment of probably riding the bench for the first time in their life. They're dealing with the pressures of performing as a pro. Financial pressures from family and friends. So a lot goes with it.''
Gray said that having a coach who made his living in the paint as a player will be beneficial as a mentor. Brown believes that to be true.
''It's a little different approach when it comes from someone who's actually done it,'' Brown said. ''It works both ways. Every big guy wants to be able to dribble and shoot the [jumper]. Now if I'm out there trying to tell [Kirk] Hinrich, 'Hey, you need to go over here to cross over,' he's going to look at me like it's my fantasy. It's probably the same with smaller coaches. Their fantasy is to get down there and dunk the ball.''
