Sam Smith: D'Antoni took the wrong job

Sam in the Sporting News about D'Antoni:

Quote:
I was talking recently a veteran coach whose name has come up in connection with some of the various openings this season. I was trying to make the case that the Knicks' job is a bad situation, that new president Donnie Walsh -- saying he is aiming for a revival when the team could be under the salary cap after the 2009-10 season -- would get the pass from fans and media.

Coaches have generally wanted to go to New York because of the old line about having an unlimited budget and still being able to exceed it. That would no longer be the case, though, Walsh said. Plus, this Knicks team seems to have a bad mix of players and would be better for an expansion coach, one who'd set up the next coach for success.

The coach listened to me and didn't disagree, but he then added, "You've got to look good on one level because they can't be worse."
Quote:
But coming off a massively underachieving season, and with a roster many regarded as more suited to an offensive game, the Bulls took a big gulp and apparently decided to offer D'Antoni a substantial contract comparable to what the Knicks eventually offered.

And it might have worked since D'Antoni is an excellent coach and competitive personality.

But the Bulls evidently didn't say pretty please.

Managing partner Jerry Reinsdorf met with D'Antoni Friday afternoon, less than a week after Bulls general manager John Paxson met with D'Antoni. The Bulls apparently asked hard questions about D'Antoni's philosophy of the game and his staff and whether he'd consider hiring a defensive-oriented assistant (Kerr also asked this). D'Antoni was said to be insulted. Hours later, he told the Bulls not to make an offer, and he accepted the Knicks' offer.

I guess $6 million per year says love in the biggest way.

But if he really wanted to go to Chicago -- also, apparently, a large media market -- and he liked the roster much better, and he saw a chance to be back at 50 wins or more by next season and be a true certified inter-conference basketball genius, is the extra $1 million a year from New York, or even less, worth it?

what if LeBron must retire 2009 because of injury? (I really wish LeBron all the best.) Nobody can know what is in 2010. No need to discuss.

Re: Sam Smith: D'Antoni took the wrong job

Sam Smith is wrong, well almost all the time, but he gets it right this time. I can't believe how under reported this is or under mentioned on this board. Given everything he turned down I am amazed that he would take the knicks job, so either we are not being told something or D'Antoni is not the man we would have needed anyway. The knicks job, barring trade or multiple lottery mega luck, is an awful job

Veteran coach - either Colin or Van Gundy.
Many coaches have to realize that if you go to a bad team and not improve, you will get axed. If you go to a decent team and do okay, you will get an extension. Financially, it is better to take less and go to a decent team. Duh!!!!
