D'Antoni has repeatedly characterized the decision as one made based upon "emotion." I think it's clear Walsh gave him the warm and fuzzies much more than Paxson/Reinsdorf, who give off a very sort of calculating professional/businessperson vibe than a personal vibe. So that, plus his wife's preference to live in NY vs. Chicago = Knicks win.

If money wasn't an issue we would of offered him more.

Short term, Bulls have a better roster. NYK could easily be a better long term sitaution given their lack of financial constraints and if D'Antoni perceived Walsh as stronger than Paxson. Walsh has been to a championship, right?

In a separate telephone interview, D'Antoni agreed to respond about why he didn't even allow the Bulls to make an offer after meeting with Reinsdorf last Friday in Phoenix.

"I didn't want it to get into a bidding war," explained D'Antoni, who insists it was his best way of taking the high road. "I was reading I was only going to New York for the money [estimated at four years and $24 million]. I thought [after meeting] John [Paxson, general manager, he] wanted me. But I'm being honest. I'm making, what, $5 million, $4.5 million in Phoenix. I knew Chicago would be up there somewhere. It doesn't matter. There's no difference between $6 million or $4 million or $5 million. It's all too much. It's more than I ever had. I was looking at what I wanted. I didn't want it to be about the money, so I didn't want them to make an offer."

You are misinterpreting. D'Antoni went out of his way to be non-confrontational. Unlike JR and Paxson. He didn't want to stoop to their level. Look at what he said about leaving Phoenix.

Quote:
Regarding leaving Phoenix, D'Antoni said "When we were getting ready to play San Antonio, I'm thinking I might be able to get an extension and stay the rest of my career in Phoenix. Two weeks later I'm on a plane to New York. How did it happen? I don't know. It's weird."
If you believe that's the whole story, I got some land to sell to you. And if he held back and didn't share what he didn't like about the Phoenix situation, why do you think he would share his true feelings about the Bulls management.

Re: Reinsdorf: money wasn't an issue

didn't pax say a week ago he wasn't going to be involved in a bidding war?

so why is JR complaining that they weren't allowed to get in a bidding war with the knicks ( a war i might add they would almost surely lose, its not like they would have bidding against the bucks or jazz...its James"we dont lose players over money" dolan)

Gotcha. Sure, in the long-term, I suppose you figure the team with the better GM will have the better roster, and that could be NY after they get out of cap space hell. It's going to take them a while, you have to figure.

That quote supports my position, not the position that D'Antoni told the Bulls not to make an offer at the time he decided he wanted to go to NY.

I fail to see what you think I said that was wrong. I said D'Antoni went to NY because (1) He didn't like JR and/or Pax as much as Walsh (including possibly thinking one or both are jerks) and (2) he and his wife prefer to live in NY over Chicago, all things being equal.

Which part is wrong?

I don't agree. JR specifically said MD "misled" the Bulls saying there was no timetable. MD explained that by the Friday night, he decided to go with the Knicks and didn't want an offer from the Bulls. That's entirely different that saying MD didn't want an offer at any point from the Bulls.

p.s. If you are still not sure, please go back and re-read the question, not just the answer.

Re: Reinsdorf: money wasn't an issue

Were you guys really that high on D'Antoni? In all seriousness he wasn't going to get us a ring in the next few years anyway. He wasn't a coach to take us to the promise land.

So why the big fuss.

I see what you're saying. I guess it's unclear. My sense was D'Antoni told the Bulls not to make an offer, not because he'd ruled out the Bulls in favor of the Knicks, but rather because he was saying "Give me a non-monetary reason why I should take this job over the NY job." I think the indictment of management is that they couldn't do that, when Chicago should have been a more appealing situation in all aspects other than perhaps considerations regarding what city the D'Antonis prefer to live in.

Either way, it seems you and I are in agreement that Reinsdorf likely came off as pompous or cold to D'Antoni.
