Sorry: Another D'Antoni thread - Sam talks to JR and Mike
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=411249
Read the whole thing. Detailed comments from both D'Antoni and Reinsdorf about what went down, when and why.

Again, if you're not interested in D'Antoni-related news, you don't need to click on the threads. You can start threads about other topics if you like. The Bulls aren't in the playoffs now, and this is basically the only story going on at the moment.

Maybe not, but you have 100% control over whether or not to read about it and whether to start new threads on new topics! By all means, feel free to give us something new to discuss!

Re: Sorry: Another D'Antoni thread - Sam talks to JR and Mike
There are indeed a lot of D'Antoni threads.
However, this one has enough specific and distinct new information that I thought it deserved its own discussion, rather than incorporating it into one of the many "Jerry is cheap" threads or even the Sam "D'Antoni made the wrong choice thread.
While I am not involved in owning this site anymore, I can say that I have as much experience moderating, supervising and running internet message boards as anyone. In my opinion, a new thread was warranted. On the other hand, if one of the moderators, community moderators or administrators had decided that they would prefer it merged, they would have done so and I would have respected that decision and if they do so in the future, I would still respect that.
The reason to merge threads is to avoid clutter on the first page of the forum. Speaking of clutter, though, this is a perfectly good topic with very interesting details on a subject all Bulls fans are interested in, and the first half page of responses, including this one, are posts cluttering the thread with backseat moderating issues, without a single mention of the topic at hand.
So, does anyone have anything to say about Reinsdorf and D'Antoni's comments? They seem to agree that as of Friday afternoon, it was understood that both parties were interested in each other and D'Antoni re-assured Reinsdorf that he could get back to him and there was no timetable. Between Friday PM and Saturday morning, D'Antoni had a change of heart and told the Bulls not to make an offer and he was going to take the Knicks job.

Re: Sorry: Another D'Antoni thread - Sam talks to JR and Mike
What I'm wondering is what was it in D'Antoni's "gut" that made him think New York was the better place to go? There seems to be some suggestion his wife wanted to live there. But other than that, what would it be? Was he just a bit creeped out by Pax or Reinsdorf? Does he just love Donnie Walsh that much? It certainly seems he gave the Bulls the impression that he was leaning toward them, or at least going to give them an opportunity to pursue him, at the time he took the Knicks gig.
D'Antoni is striking me as a bit of an odd bird. Perhaps he's so non-confrontational that he just avoided getting back to the Bulls entirely?

I can't imagine an nba coach being that wimpy. It had to have been something walsh said or did that made him extremely comfortable. Either that or he lied about pretty much everything that was previously reported.

Personally, I like not having to sort through a long thread, and keeping the discussion in each thread about a single article, or at least a single aspect of the event, if multiple articles address it from different points of view.
And, as far as the number of threads on the two boards go, you know that there are far more songs about love lost than love found :-)
Or, to paraphrase Tolstoy:
The story of a happy family is always the same, but every story behind a family's breakup is unique.

Re: Sorry: Another D'Antoni thread - Sam talks to JR and Mike
I guess it has the ring of truth to it. He told the Bulls not to make an offer because he didn't want it to be about money, which makes some sense. He had made his decision and didn't want to be confused in that decision by whatever number the Bulls put on the table.
I think it's an odd decision, and D'Antoni as much as agrees, saying he didn't know why he made it. Having read this, I feel a little better about things for some reason. He says positive things about both franchises, and it appears that all parties behaved reasonably honorably. It just appears that Donnie Walsh has the ability to make people fall in love with him, which is a good ability to have.
I'm not at all convinced that D'Antoni is a godsend. I've seen smart people deride him pretty vehemently, in fact. And, Steve Kerr obviously didn't think he couldn't survive without him. It is just discouraging to target someone and see them go elsewhere.
Sam seems invigorated by his move, does he not?
I actually like the link over to the right even more - "Report - D'Antoni to cut Marbury loose." Big news - the Knicks would trade Marbury for Diaw and Barbosa. Wow! I submit Walsh and D'Antoni for a Nobel Prize. Genius! What's the holdup?

Bulls need to take a look at Terry Porter.

The one comment that struck me was D'Antoni's regarding Reinsdorf:
Quote:

Jerry was feeling me out a little. He was trying to get convinced.
|
What this article cements in my mind was that NY didn't hold back, but went all the way, perhaps on the first date, while Pax and Jerry were taking their time, trying to be convinced. They were excited, in their own sort of way, but not in a way that got D'Antoni excited. He was just a little put off by their methodical, mechanical approach to feeling him out.
He's looking for some passion, like a good Italian should!

D'Antoni likes autonomy. Its pretty clear that he thought he'd have more autonomy under Walsh than he would under Paxson and Reinsdorf.
