Bulls assistants illuminate the middle man, Del Negro
Quote:
There really is a method to the unorthodox seating arrangement on the bench of the Chicago Bulls' Summer League team this week in Orlando.
It's the Vinny Sandwich.
Not only is Vinny Del Negro the only head coach working among the six teams playing here, he is strategically seated between 71-year-old assistant Del Harris on his right and 63-year-old assistant Bernie Bickerstaff on his left.
Neither Harris nor Bickerstaff ventures very far from Del Negro's side. Each gets an ear to chew and a make-believe megaphone to impart his wisdom to Vinny throughout the game.
Del Negro's gaze never leaves the court, but the assistants turn their heads to make their points. It's like basketball coaching lessons in stereo.
"This is the Vinny Show, no doubt about it," Bickerstaff said after the Bulls beat Orlando on Wednesday. "He will do well in coaching. He's such a sharp young guy. We're just here to help him. But the worst thing we could do is inundate him with too much. That's what we have to guard against."

Well, if you're going to have an inexperienced coach, this seems like the way to go...

Re: Bulls assistants illuminate the middle man, Del Negro
Our whole coaching situation is so unorthodox, but I tend to like out-of-the-box ideas which is maybe why I liked the hire in the first place. I liked the assistant coach hires just as much, if not more so.
You're got a group of assistant coaches who have literally seen it all -- won COY awards, coached contenders, coached lousy lottery teams, and a variety of different players. And yet Vinny seems to be a bright mind who hasn't done this before, but can absorb what his assistants are saying, integrate that into his brain, and communicate those things to his players.
I tend to think Vinny was hired for his communication skill and more upbeat personality (aside from any basketball knowledge), so an ability to milk that experience and effectively help his players grasp it could make this work really well.
It could also flop too, but like I said...it's a creative approach and it's different...we needed different.

I agree, and the only reason it worked was we were able to follow through with hiring the top-level assistants. It's a really interesting mix, and I hope it works out well.

This well may be the first focus on this interesting and rather unique "coaching triumvirate" that will probably draw a lot of media attention this season.

Only if the team actually improves (which, by the way, doesn't necessarily need to be in the win column this season).

Re: Bulls assistants illuminate the middle man, Del Negro
Does anybody know how long the contracts of Del Harris and Bickerstaff are?
