How long before Vinny's favorites fall out of favor?
Coming into the job, Vinny said that he was excited to be able to coach Thomas, Noah, and Sefolosha.
I won't really comment on Sefolosha much here.
With Thomas, I am not too worried. He is taking huge strides in his jumpshot, and is genuinely working hard this offseason.
Joakim Noah on the other hand, showed up to summer league out of shape, and exhibiting no skill. This guy has been out smoking pot and drinking...and has supposively working out during this time period too. Guys who have been properly working out don't show up this out of shape.
In addition, I think Aaron Gray's game will be better suited for our fast break offense. Not to mention, having a 7'2" center in the game is always a very nice thing to have.
So basically, how long before Vinny concedes that Noah doesn't deserve to play over Thomas, Gooden, and Gray, and has the kid playing few minutes until he starts playing better (if ever)?
Re: How long before Vinny's favorites fall out of favor?
Well, first of all, you're making a huge assumption that these are Del Negro's "favorites" because they just happen to be guys he mentioned by name at a press conference... seems a little silly.
I don't even know what to say about your idea that Aaron Gray would be better in a fast paced offense than Joakim Noah... it's right up there with the "Ben Gordon is a great defender" arguments... just clueless.

Aaron Gray measured in at 7'2" at the predraft camp.
The idea of Aaron Gray being great in a fast pace offense would be contingent on Gray getting in shape. Not getting in shape, in terms of superbly improving his athletic ability or speed, but more so in that he won't be exhausted from running up and down the court for 3-4 minutes.
Now I think the fit of why Gray would be great in a fast pace offense is best seen by comparing him to another player, I'll use Joakim Noah.
Yes, Joakim Noah, when in shape, is pretty fast, athletic, can dunk. What athletic big can't do that though? The guy has absolutely no offensive skill, so if he has to try to score with a player in between him and the basket, it will often end in an awkward shot attempt that is a miss.
Now what is the purpose of the fast pace offense? To take advantage of the defense not being set. Who are usually the last people down the court? The center and power forward. So if we get Aaron Gray down the court fast, there is only a smaller power forward, or an even smaller player there, Gray turns around, seals off his defender, and either A. we pass it into him, and he does a little post move and scores. Or B. he just keeps the guy sealed off, and the man with the ball will be able to just drive to the hole.
Now these are actually things I've seen from Gray in the last year. In the half court this he is especially valuable. He gives us a post up option, and he can seal off his man (or bump him enough, using his great strength), to give Rose a better driving lane at the hoop.
Not to mention, Aaron Gray is the only guy who sets a good pick on this team, and it's not like you can do any pick and pop type stuff with Noah, since Gray is a better jumpshooter than Noah. (and Vinny said we are going to run a lot of Pick n' Roll).

I can't believe you spent all that time typing that.... my favorite part was where you had Aaron Gray racing down the court to take advantage of smaller players... while you were looking at the pre-draft measurements (which you conveniently rounded up on his height) why didn't you look at the fact that in consecutive years he turned in 2 of the 4 slowest 3/4 court sprint times in the last decade?
Re: How long before Vinny's favorites fall out of favor?
He was one of the first guys down the court multiple times last season. There is this funny thing called hustle, that allows slower people to get down the court faster than quicker people in basketball.
This mix shows some of the ways that Aaron Gray can be effective that I was talking about. As I talked about, Gray can seal off a man, allowing Rose a clearer path to drive. This is seen in the video with Gray sealing off a man allowing Hinrich to drive. There are two examples in this mix of Gray in transition. Not the plays where I was talking about where Gray races down court, seals off a smaller guy, and then gets the ball and does a simple post move for the score, but he did that a few times last season.
Oh, and sorry for rounding up Gray's height 1/4 inch. I guess rounding down 1 3/4 inches is the proper method for rounding here.
Also, I think Aaron Gray will easily be our best big man for the pick n' roll, which Vinny said we are going to do a lot of.

Gray was running back on defense, not running up for a dunk.

Many here don't say it, but I for one like Gray's skill set. True he isn't fast, or nimble. But he has a nice touch from 13 feet, and is a solid LOW POST SCORER! Throw in the fact he is a big bodied center also helps. And playing in an uptempo offense doesn't mean you have to be quick. Look at Shaq on the Suns. All Gray has to do is rebound, and throw some good outlet passes, which he can do.
Re: How long before Vinny's favorites fall out of favor?
Hey, i love Aaron Gray... and I think he'll be solid in the pick and roll... but he'll have trouble getting end-to-end in a high paced offense, that's just a fact.
Re: How long before Vinny's favorites fall out of favor?
I like the team better with Gray then with Noah. Noah might be my least favorite player on the Bulls, he just doesn't have a great skill set or a drive to get better.
That being said... Gray could easily be involved in an up-tempo offense. First off, this isn't "And1 streetball." Up-Tempo isn't running full speed EVERY play, every time down the court, it's just more getting out on the break and trying to create 4 on 5s. Secondly, all he really has to do is beat HIS man downcourt. Sure he's not going to beat Rose and Gordon downcourt, but if he can beat Shaq, Big Z, Kamen, Bogut, Haywood, Dampier, ect, either through Hustle or pure footspeeed, then he's golden.
