Scalabrine to join coaching staff?

Quote:
According to sources familiar with the situation, the fan favorite is in line to join Tom Thibodeau's coaching staff for the upcoming season, CSNChicago.com has learned.

Since former Bulls assistant coach Rick Brunson departed for a position with the Charlotte Bobcats in the offseason, the organization has had an opening and while the likes of former Magic assistant Steve Clifford was considered--the member of Stan Van Gundy's staff in Orlando recently accepted a job with the Lakers, where he'll be reunited with All-Star center Dwight Howard--it appears that Scalabrine is now a front-runner for the spot.

Though the popular reserve forward, who expressed his desire to continue playing in an in-depth piece by Sam Smith of Bulls.com earlier this summer, averaged a modest 1.1 points per game in just over 200 minutes in his two-year stint in Chicago, his knowledge of the game is highly regarded, his relationship with Thibodeau goes back to their days together in Boston and at only 34 years old, fresh off an 11-year NBA career and still active enough to bang bodies with current players, his transition to the coaching ranks has the potential to be a seamless one.

Re: Scalabrine to join coaching staff?

That would be kind of strange to me.

After the season was over, Scal was on the Score and they asked the very question. At the time, Scal said that he had no interest in coaching and wanted to continue to play as long as some team wanted him. When the NBA was done with him, he wanted to go into broadcasting instead.

Perhaps he changed his tune, or perhaps he is just trying to keep his foot in the NBA door if it happens.

Re: Scalabrine to join coaching staff?

It's a way to stay in the NBA, and potentially become active for stretches, if the need arises. Keeps the door open for booth work, too. It may not be his first choice, but it's not a bad one for him. Too bad his star pupil (omer) left!

Re: Scalabrine to join coaching staff?

I would think that he might go over to Europe. He's pretty much exactly the kind of big man that succeeds over there and he might even find some team that was willing to pay similarly to what he'd get sitting on the end of an NBA bench.

Yeah, Captain B-Cup is doing 11 road games for Boston next year. Donny Marshall has been Boston's road guy, but increasingly it looks like he's going to go to work for a national network soon.

This seems to be the path he wanted post NBA. I think he could eventually turn into a terrific color commentator. Good luck, Scal!

He'll do well. Hope he enjoys it.
