Boozer's option NOT picked-up

Clev did not pick-up Boozer's option, as some newspapers reported... so he is now a restricted free agent.... meaning any team can make an offer, but Clev can match. Clev can talk contract with Booz after July 15th or so, and can make a max offer of about $5 mil per year, 6 year max.... which is what I think they should do. In all, I think this is a great move. They could've held him to his contract of "only" $800,000 for this year... a bargain, but they and he and his agent know he is worth more. Now they can lock him up long term too. Class move for a class player. No more coach flights for Booz and the wife.... 1st Class Baby!

The article in the Plain Dealer says they're going to try and sign him long term him immediately when the signing period begins. Carlos said he feels loyalty to Cleveland for giving him a chance, and he wants to stay there long term.

If they didnt pick it up, then he is a unrestricted free agent. If he would have been a RFA if they didnt, it would have been a no brainer not to pick it up.

This is a stupid move, save money for a year then match whatever deal comes next year.

I disagree. If the option was picked up and a team decided to overpay Boozer, Cleveland would be forced to match the offer or lose Boozer. I can only speculate what teams would offer Carlos if he had another strong year like the past one. Who knows, you might have seen deals offering him 8 to 10 million per year. Rather than risk that scenario, you can do a deal now to save money in the future. Lock Boozer up for the long haul and spend less money to do so.

That's what I'm sayin'.... a 6 yr $30mil dollar contract for a proven player.... can't see why that isn't a good thing. Sure, the team COULDA paid alot less... but it AIN'T MY MONEY!!! Pay him what he's worth and it sends a solid message to Boozer, other FA's, and the rest of the team. Good job Pax. Now if they can shed a few of the dead-weight contracts we have sitting on the bench....

I think he's unrestricted and would still be unrestricted next year. They are taking a calculated risk that he will feel loyalty to the team for allowing him to cash in a year early. I hope their right.

What are you talking about? This is a great move.

Not only do they get more respect from Boozer, by giving him more money this year. They'll also save around $20 million, because they won't have to pay him as much money this offseason as they would have to next offseason.

I think he'll get something like a 6 year, $40 million contract. He'll obviously have better stats next season and he'll be a better player, so if they had picked up his option, they'd have to give him something like a 6 year $60 million contract next season.

Boozer, Cavs deal nearly set

Quote:
According to NBA sources, the Cavaliers have come to terms with Boozer, who became a free agent Thursday, and will officially sign him to a contract as soon as the free-agent signing period begins July 14.

Under league rules and the Cavaliers' current salary cap position, Boozer can sign a deal with the club for around $41 million over six years. The exact amount won't be known until July 14 when the NBA releases it's updated salary cap figures. There's a chance there would be a player option in the deal, which would allow Boozer to get out of the contract early if he desired.

I heard a rumor out of Utah that they are talking about a max offer for Boozer. If that happens Cleveland can't match it. This would be one of the biggest blunders ever if he walks because they tried to do the right thing for him.

I believe they could match, but they'd have to clear more cap-space first.
