Ferry should have called the Suns bluff...
The ATLien just IM'ed me this:
Arizona Republic columnist Paola Boivin: The Phoenix Suns reportedly will not match the offer given to Joe Johnson by the Atlanta Hawks, due to Robert Sarver's concern about his team's payroll next season. General Manager Bryan Colangelo is extremely upset with Sarver's decision to not match the offer made by Billy Knight and the Atlanta Hawks. The word from Johnson's camp seems to be a sense of relief. Johnson's agent, Arn Tellem, tells sources that his client is exceptionally happy to be a member of the Hawks next season, and that it would have been a disappointment if they had returned to the Phoenix Suns Organization.
So...Cavs could have had Joe Johnson instead of Larry Hughes?
Oops.

Re: Ferry should have called the Suns bluff...
to pry johnson away form the suns the cavs wud hav had to make a similar offer to the hawks, which cud pay as much as $20 mil to johnson in his first year. IMHO that type of money shud be reserved for a franchise player, and i just dont think that johnson can carry a franchise. johnson may hav been a better fit than hughes, and an overall ebtter player, but the money it wud hav taken was just too much

Atleast Cleveland has Hughes now. You can't complain with that.

Re: Ferry should have called the Suns bluff...
Have to know what his contract stipulated: if it was too high we couldn't have possible resigned Z and gotten marshall
Good move by Atlanta although they have like now 4 SF's on their team

Yeah, hindsight is a wonderful luxury. But lets just say that the did decide to resign him and match our offer. Of course by that time Hughes, Allen, etc. have all resigned or been signed by someone else. Then of course we're stuck with trying to pick up a stop gap like Dermarr Johnson. It worked out alot better than it could have.

Exactly. Cavs fans should be happy with their offseason. Hughes and Johnson are atleast comparable, and pursuing Hughes wasn't an all or nothing risk like pursuing Johnson would have been.

I agree. And if the Hawks really did drop 20 mill in the 1st year of the contract, I can see why the Suns decided not to match.

Wait, you're saying that about Joe Johnson, in favor of Larry Hughes?

I don't understand why the Suns didn't think that was what was going to happen all along?
It's clear all the basketball people in Phoenix expected the Suns to match anything. But the guy who actually writes the checks said, "No mas".

Re: Ferry should have called the Suns bluff...
There's no way to predict who is bluffing and who isn't these days. I'm glad Cleveland didn't put themselves out on a limb and enter the game of death in pursuit of Joe Johnson. If you land JJ, you win the jackpot and if you lose, you go home without a pot to ...... in. That's not the kind of odds I'd like to play around with and I see why Cleveland backed off.

As far as I can tell this report isn't even real. I've searched and so far find no authentic source.

Did you try just typing in what I quoted? That would have been my first thing to do search wise.
