Josh Smith and LeBron James
Now that Luke Jackson has been traded away for spare parts, it solidifies that was a very poor draft pick. As an NBA fan in general, right from that draft day I was wondering why the Cavs didn't take a chance on Josh Smith. In retrospect Smith was primed to be a bust while Jackson looked like the outside shooter the Cavs needed. But Smith also had huge upside, and what he was known to bring to the table already was something any team needs-defense, energy, strong finishing. Now, in 2006, Smith has added a smooth J, in addition to his crazy dunking and shot-blocking. I hate to say it, but I wonder if Smith could have been Lebron's Pippen? This is only from a fan of basketball, but I can imagine that actual Cavs fans must lose sleep about this.

Re: Josh Smith and LeBron James
Jameer Nelson
Sebstian Telfair
Delonte West
Beno Udrih
Chris Duhon
All picked after Jackson.
That probably bothers us even more than missing out on Smith.

Re: Josh Smith and LeBron James
We all know taking Telfair and Duhon was a stretch at #10, Jackson fill into our lap, he had to be the pick, either that or Kirk Snyder I think was right there. We need a guard, we were starting Ira Newble

Re: Josh Smith and LeBron James
Bassy at 10 wouldn't have been a stretch as most think.
Bassy + LBJ = marketability out the wazoo.

Re: Josh Smith and LeBron James
Nelson fell because of his height and questionable J. I think it's obvious that the Cavs still need a pg. and Telfair and James would have been a nice match, but I think that LBJ paired with Josh Smith really would be quite the tandem. Good pgs are nice and hard to come by, but I really think they missed the boat on Smith, an amazing athlete who LeBron would bring the best out of. He doesn't need a lot of shots, and his D would have complimented this team nicely.

Re: Josh Smith and LeBron James
The problem in terms of taking Smith is that the Cavs strengths are there forward spots btw James, Gooden, AV, and Marshall they are as good or better then anybody else in the leauge: good size, good rebounding, playmaker, shooter, etc.
Looking back at it they knew they had problems at PG (who was tabbed to be the starter that year: Ollie?) and they blew it not grabbing Nelson or Telfair. What is the most galling thing is not so much they blew it on Luke (the draft is imperfect) but they wasted another first rounder on the Sasha trade. Now come on that doesn't make any sense at all you draft a SG to complement Lebron but then don't trust that choice and the same summer you trade a for another SG? No sense at all

Re: Josh Smith and LeBron James
I wish they would have got Bassy or Jameer... they need a great penetrating PG. Would allow Bron to up his off-the ball game, and he could slash to the rack for put backs.
PG Nelson / Telfair
SG Hughes
SF James
PF Gooden
C Illgauskus
Kind of scary...
