Post-Trade Thoughts

Put your random observations in here.

So far my biggest surprise is that Joe Smith looked really good. I never really thought he was noteworthy but his jumper is good and he does a good job cutting. Defense isn't great (he got beat by Warrick a few times) but he wasn't bad either

in the Chicago game:
Hughes with a decent game 13 points on 11 shots (typical Hughes game NO FTA). Gooden 4-11

Re: Post-Trade Thoughts

I mentioned on several occasions that I thought Joe Smith was the best player in the deal. He's just played really well this year, and he by himself is light-years better than Drew Gooden.

Wallace was a lot better than I expected, actually. His points were all spoon-fed of course, but he and Delonte played really well together on the pick/roll. His defensive rotation was so markedly better than Drew Gooden, my excitement about this trade is still growing. I think we are going to be a very strong defensive team on the inside. It's hard to gauge since it was against Memphis, but once again we killed our opponents on the boards. When AV gets back, it could become ludicrous.

Wally and West didn't shoot well at all. I think Wally will find his shot, especially if he plays with Lebron. And I really liked everything else West did out there besides shoot. He ran the p/r really well, and his length bothered the guy he was guarding all the time. He hustles really well, too.

Seeing Gooden fail to rotate and give a wide open lane to the basket in his first 2 minutes with the Bulls today made me realize how much our defense might improve. Most NBA fans don't have a clue how much he hurt the team defensively. We're not going to kill teams like this every night, and I'm a little worried that we dropped our intensity in the second half. But that's to be expected I guess with such a huge lead.

I just can't wait for Tuesday now.

Re: Post-Trade Thoughts

For the first time all season I wasn't throwing something at my television set frustrated with Larry or Drew. The guys we bought in here are high b-ball IQ players and capable of playing off Lebron.

Wallace: He really impressed me. His strengths fit nicely next to Z. I was opposed to a Wallace/Z starting group but after watching how they played off one another and completely shut down the rim that could be a strong group. Obviously Wallace is good defensively but what I liked the most was how he caught the ball, went up quickly, and dunked it. Gooden would always take a dribble or go up weak which drove me insane. He sets hard picks also, and doesn't play outside of his limitations.

Delonte: Love what Delonte can bring to this team. He is a perfect PG complement to Lebron because he can play off the ball, but also showed some nice handles and penetration ability. He has some nice PG instincts in terms of passing. Need him to find his shot though.

Wally: Like Wally also. He is aggressive offensively which we need and knows how to work without the ball. Wouldn't mind seeing some more sets run for him as I think he can produce 15-20pts for us on a decent %. He did a good job staying with his man defensively also.

Joe Smith: Great player. As Brand said he is just plain better than Gooden. I love his smarts and skill set for this team. Much better than I thought he was.

Overall like all of the new additions. The team is light years deeper. I wonder if Varejao will be fine with coming off the bench behind Big Ben though...they are similar in what they bring to the table and Ben seems energized, might not want to mess with his confidence

Re: Post-Trade Thoughts

This was the first time I've watched Lebron for the Cavs and thought he was playing with real NBA players.

And I was suprised by how hard Ben Wallace was working. Having he and Andy on the same team is going to allows to be bring unrelenting pressure over 48 minutes. I think we are going to force a lot more turnovers than we used to.

Delonte is the first real point guard that has played with Lebron since maybe Jeff Mcinnis? It's so weird to now see him with someone who can start a fast break and set up the offense without Lebron's help.

For the first time we look like a real basketball team and not just Lebron James and 4 stiffs. This trade looks like it makes everyone we already have a lot better.

LOL I saw that as well. I hope Gooden plays well for Chicago, he is a good guy.

It's actually kind of weird to watch him out there playing for the Bulls (especially without a head band)

Ben Wallace will play hard solely for the fact he can finally wear a head bang again.

Re: Post-Trade Thoughts

They all fitted perfectly, as expected! I definitely think Wally needs to start though. He'll gain so much from Lebron's drives.

Re: Post-Trade Thoughts

Everyone here's done a good job of summing up the pros from the trade.

The cons?

The fact that the blog http://heylarryhughespleasestoptakin...ybadshots.com/ is now done. seriously, that was a good outlet of enjoyment. O well, I suppose it's worth it.

And it's also worth mentioning it made me really happy that Wallace didn't jack up short jumpshots! If he realizes that he's not out there for his offensive production (other than being open after someone drives and subsequently dunking the ball) then there is no problem I can see; other than him being intentionally fouled. But regardless, I'm excited to see how we fare against Boston.
