Jameer Nelson article

The answer to the Cavaliers' two biggest needs visited Wednesday in one small package at Gund Arena. Jameer Nelson, the national college player of the year, has everything the Cavs are looking for with their 10th pick in the June NBA Draft, and attracted a close look during a predraft workout that was closed to the media.

The Cavs crave a backup point guard who will push the offense at the same pace as starter Jeff McInnis. The Cavs also want a player with the ability to hit the outside shot. Nelson fits that bill. He finished his college career third all-time in assists in the Atlantic 10 and he was one of the best outside shooters in the country.
There is a strong push for Telfair around here recently but I think we should all keep Nelson in mind as well. I was a big fan of his when he was in college and will be a fan of his in the NBA wherever he goes. He can score, but most of all he gives a lot of energy to the whole team and makes a lot of good things happen. He'd be able to contribute right away. He's a leader.

If the Cavaliers believe Telfair is going to be a great point guard, they should take him, because they can afford to wait a few years. But Jameer Nelson will be there too.

I agree. I would have no problem with Nelson. I think before I hitched my wagon to Telfair, I initially wanted Nelson for the Cavs.

It just comes down to if the Cavs project Telfair out to be significantly better than Nelson. I think the Cavs are in a position since it's a backup point role, where they can take that gamble.

On the other hand if they just straight out take Nelson, it could pay huge dividends right off the bat for the Cavs. Having a point of that quality to come off the bench would be something akin to when they had Brandon backing up Price. It's a wonderful luxury, and would be great insurance in preventing the collapse that happened to the Cavs this year. Because really they are a backup point guard away, that's it. And Nelson also brings sure fire shooting, that maybe Telfair might have to grow into.

I think this is an excellent reason to try and trade down for two for two of Utah's picks. 14 and 21. Portland might draft Telfair at 13, but then you'd still have Nelson there to pick. And you can use the last pick to get maybe a Jackson or some one of similiar caliber.

I think the Cavs are in a good position in this draft. So let's just say I'm in the camp for drafting a point guard to back up Mcinnis. Nelson and Telfair are the two best fits in my mind.

I want the Cavaliers to draft Nelson. He has enough experience to play well early next season. He is a leader on the floor. In a couple of years, Telfair might be the better player, but right now I just want a good backup PG who can shoot.

I mean Kevin Ollie is a terrific person who is a great example to young kids of how to work hard and do the right things in life. But Kevin is just Not the answer at back-up point guard.
