What are your favorite stadiums in College Football?
I am picking mine based mostly on tradition and design.
1) "The Big House" (Michigan Wolverines)- Just a massive stadium, with a capacity of over 107,000. Biggest stadium in College Football This stadium has seen it all.
2) "Tiger Stadium" (LSU Tigers)- Opposing teams get goosebumps just setting foot in the place. Originally built in 1926, this has been the setting for SEC battles for generations. The 90,000+ fans make it even harder for a road team to escape with a victory.
3) "Beaver Stadium" (Penn State Nittany Lions)- The 2nd largest stadium in the nation. This place, like the school, comes out of nowhere, and is just a monster. Big 10 titles have been won and lost here, and Joe Paterno built one of the greatest coaching resumes in history walking these sidelines.
4) "Neyland Stadium" (Tennessee Volunteers)- Another SEC hotspot, this beauty was built in 1921, and was once the biggest in the nation. With over 104K orange fans, Tennessee is always a tough road game for any opponent.
5) "Kyle Field" (Texas A&M Aggies)- One of the most interesting designs of stadium I have ever seen. Although A&M doesn't have an amazing history, their fans make this place an upset waiting to happen for the Big 12.
Others-
The Horseshoe (Ohio State U)
The Swamp (Florida)
Camp Randall (Wisconsin)
Memorial Coliseum (USC)
Also, can't forgot about the gem of the Bowl season, the Rose Bowl:
Re: What are your favorite stadiums in College Football?
Of the one's I've personally been to, my top 3 are:
1. Rose Bowl - I'm being a homer here, but is there going wrong with picking this as one of the best stadiums to catch a college football game?
2. Camp Randall Stadium (Madison, WI) - Got to check out the stadium before the boxes went up along the eastern side. Didn't get to catch a game there, as I was visiting in spring, but can only imagine how crazy that place gets during a game.
3. Memorial Stadium(Berkeley, CA) - Grew up having Tightwad Hill to watch Bears games in, and what do I do instead? Sell cokes inside the stadium. Seriously, this is also an underrated stadium. Simple, but a great place to watch a college game.
Re: What are your favorite stadiums in College Football?
I'm a huge homer, but I think the student section completely seperates Camp Randall from 99% of college football stadiums. It's just completely outrageous and when they were expanding the stadium the architects were afraid we would tear the whole thing down during "Jump Around" after the Third Quarter. Plus Herbstreit stopped listing us as one of his favorite places to see a game a few years ago because it's not a "family friendly environment". No **** Kirk, it's 30,000 drunk college kids who want to do dirty chants, taunt the opposing team, and dance.
The only other major stadium I've been to was the Big House and trust me AJ, that place is so overrated it's ridiculous. The fans show up late and leave early. The fans aren't that knowledgeable and they are quiet as hell. There are no chants and MAYBE 2 songs they do. In fact, the only involvement from them I saw at all was when the other team got stuffed on 3rd Down they'd do some "you suck" song, they would make noise before kickoffs, there was a "ooooo" chant they did raising the roof with one hand, and they would clap along to Hail to the Victors. And they would CLAP, only a few people would actually sing the fight song, which is definitely common, but considering they aren't vocal at all and it's the most recognizable fight song in the world, it was shocking. I was expecting it to be like Rocky Top in Tennessee, but instead it was like On Wisconsin (which I guarantee no one here except me knows the full first verse to and I only know a few people who went there with me who knew it; but i DEFINITELY knew the verse to Hail to the Victors).
Plus the brother of one of my best friends from high school is a walkon at Iowa right now. He says that the team is in complete agreement that the Big House is horrible. It's the quietest place they have ever played, and that's just amazing considering it's always in front of the "most people watching a college football game in the country."
I imagine Nayland, Tiger Stadium, The Horseshoe, Beaver Stadium and the whitewash, Texas A&M and the 12th man, the Swamp, and a few others to be great, but The Big House isn't on that level. Historic to see a game at, but the atmosphere is crappy. I also imagine the Colliseum for USC being pretty weak, but never being there I obviously can't say for sure, and a friend of mine says it's pretty fun.

Damn Badgers.
Nimreitz, I've gotta give the Wisconsin fans (students and alumni) credit--some of the best fans in all of sports. Last two times UCLA has made it to the Rose Bowl Game, we've faced Wisconsin. Over 75% of that stadium was red BOTH times. I credit that somewhat to the poor showing of UCLA fans (on 1/1/99, many Bruins fans claimed to be 'let down' by the last regular season game loss to Miami, ending UCLA's chances at a national championship), but a lot of credit ought to go to the strong fan base the Badgers have.

All bias aside (which is a lot of work for me), the Coliseum is terribly overrated. And not just for football games. I went there for a Metallica/Korn/Kid Rock concert a number of years ago, and it was a HORRIBLE place acoustically for a concert as well. The only thing that makes the Colisuem is it's history and the strong fan base the Trojans have.
Re: What are your favorite stadiums in College Football?
I go to Michigan, and the big house is my favorite football stadium.
However, you are right in talking about how pathetic the fans are. Every single time i went to a game I was pissed off with how apathetic all the fans off. When the students are there (they usually show up a quarter late), they are pretty good. There are also several sections of the stadium that cheer loudly. However, over half the stadium is full of old people who refuse to cheer or stand up or do anything. They just sit and watch the game, and those are tthe people that make the stadium so quiet. Whenever we tried to do a maize out, maybe 1/4 of everyone in the stadium actually wore maize, while the rest just wore whatever they wanted. When the students try to start the wave, the section under the pressbox refuses to do it for some unknown reason.
Even though the students are ok sometimes, thats only under ideal conditions. Against Central Michigan, the game was postponed for awhile due to rain. By the time the game resumed, over half the students left, and this was when the score was 7-0 or something like that. Another game tthat I remember was against a decent team (Iowa maybe?) and should have been a decent game. The weatther was terrible that day, but I went anyways in a sweatshirt to cheer for my team. I get tthere, not even half the students even show up for the game. My seats are in the 96th row, and I was allowed to go to like the 30th because no one was there.
In conclusion, the big house is awesome and Michigan fans who have tickets are terrible. The team whose fans I think are the best is Penn State, so I'll nominate there stadium as a top stadium.
