How about the part where Joe Pa hasn't been accused of any legal wrongdoing (yet)? How about the part in 2002 where he followed the letter of the law and passed the allegation along to his administrative supervisor? Yes he should have ignored the obligations of the chain and command to pass it along to police, but it's not like he did nothing about it.

Like I said, let the investigation unfold and then cast judgement.

Re: Penn State AD charged with perjury

A lawyer might be able to correct me if I'm wrong but the grand jury might have cleared Joe Pa just because of his age and the fact that he really wasn't doing anything legally wrong. But the fact remains, he had the chance to go to the police with the information he had and did not.

Re: Penn State AD charged with perjury

It's not legal wrong doing. It's moral wrong doing.

Coaches have been fired for being associated with much less. People are having a problem here because it's Joe Paterno and they worry about his legacy. Paterno has enough power around campus that he could've at the very least stopped Sandusky from being affiliated with the university while doing these things.

People want to talk about Paterno's situation as if he's just any coach. He practically built Penn State. He had enough power to simply say no to stepping down despite a strong administrative push a few years back. He could've at the very least got Sandusky removed from campus.

Of all the stupid laws in America if it can be proved you know about a pedo and just keep it moving your ass deserves legal punishment. It's not like a murder or organized crime where there's some threat of physical harm either.

It's always the old shit you tried to look the other way on that comes back on you tenfold. Sucks for Paterno it'll end like this, he's probably gonna be miserable for the rest of his life..but it's partially his own doing...so oh well

I was replying to Quite Frankly.

Also I think him retiring on his own terms is the wrong move for the University. While I know a lot of those people in charge at State College have their jobs thanks to him, it sends the wrong message.

On the other hand I'd love to see the grief they'll receive in Columbus the following week.

I won't question that their was moral wrong doing on his part. He heard the allegation and simply just followed the letter of the law and went to his administrative supervisor, when instead he should have just gone straight to the police with the matter.

Re: Penn State AD charged with perjury

That's too narrow a view looking ONLY at the 2002 incident. He definitely had to know about the 1998 investigation also. So now he's just moving it up the chain of command when he knows Sandusky is a serial child rapist. He spoke at his charity events, let him hang around campus, and attend closed practices with kids. All while he knew what Sandusky was.

And yes sMaK, I think it's possible the Grand Jury didn't go after him because of his age, seeming senility, and legacy. Some of his statements seem inconsistent with McQueary's, and he was deemed highly credible.

Finally, I don't attach as much blame to McQueary because I think he could have been extremely traumatized by what he saw, but also because I'm not JUST going after Paterno for moving it up the chain of command in one isolated instance.

Re: Penn State AD charged with perjury

Check out this article, written in APRIL of this year...

http://www.timesonline.com/columnist...r-comment-area

Quote:
The Jerry Sandusky situation seems a matter of failure to connect certain dots, or perhaps unwillingness in that regard. Lots of people besides the former Penn State defensive coordinator have some explaining to do.

Allegations of improper conduct with an underage male first surfaced in 1998, while Sandusky was still employed by Penn State. That incident allegedly occurred in a shower at Penn State's on-campus football facility. No charges were filed.

Sandusky retired the next year, in 1999. He was 55, prime age for a coach. Odd, to say the least - especially with Joe Paterno thought even then to be ready to quit and Sandusky a likely, openly-discussed successor.

It seems logical to ask: What did Paterno know, and when did he know it? What did Penn State's administration know, and when did they know it?

Best-case scenario: Charges are never brought, and Sandusky walks away with his reputation permanently scarred. The rumors, the jokes, the sideways glances - they won't ever stop. Paterno and Penn State do the great escape.

Worst-case scenario: Sandusky is charged. Then it seems reasonable to wonder: Did Penn State not make an issue of Sandusky's alleged behavior in 1998 in exchange for him walking away from the program at an age premature for most coaches? Did Penn State's considerable influence help get Sandusky off the hook?

Don't kid yourself. That could happen. Don't underestimate the power of Paterno and Penn State in central Pennsylvania when it comes to politicians, the police and the media.

In 1999, Penn State was rid of Sandusky. His rep was unblemished, which allowed him to continue running a charitable foundation that gave him access to underage males. To be a volunteer assistant with a high school football team, thus gaining access to underage males.

If Paterno and Penn State knew, but didn't act, instead facilitating Sandusky's untroubled retirement - are Paterno and Penn State responsible for untoward acts since committed by Sandusky?

This is far from an outrageous hypothesis, especially given the convenient timeline.

Initially accused in 1998. Retires in 1999. Never coaches college football again. Sandusky was very successful at what he did. The architect of Linebacker U. Helped win national championships in 1982 and 1986. Recognized as college football's top assistant in 1986 and 1999.

Never any stories about Sandusky being pursued for a high-profile job. Never any rumors about him coming out of retirement.

But there's no shortage of stories and rumors about Penn State football sweeping problems under the rug, is there?

Why did college football let an accomplished coach like Sandusky walk away at 55? Why did he disappear into relative anonymity?

A grand jury, spurred by a complaint made by a 15-year-old boy in 2009, has been investigating Sandusky for 18 months. Witnesses include Paterno and Penn State athletic director Tim Curley. Interviewing Paterno about a subject like this had to have been one of the single most uncomfortable acts in the history of jurisprudence.

Plenty of questions remain yet unanswered. Potentially among them: What's more important, Penn State football or the welfare of a few kids?

You might not want to hear the answer.

Jeeez

Imagine: Victim One, according to the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News, was often taken out of class by Sandusky to be further molested. Just taken out of school by somebody who wasn't his parent, with no questions asked until his mother finally called the principal and asked her to check into it. Later that day, the principal called back in tears. "You need to come down here right now."

Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law requires that certain people (including doctors, nurses, school administrators, etc.) requires reporting of these incidents to authorities within 48 hours. The problem is that the statute of limitations on that offense is only 2 years, so everyone is safe with regards to the 2002 incident.

Seriously, some of those reporters sounded more like crazed fans. They probably left from the press conference to go protest with those idiotic PSU students.
