Heisman Thread 2012

Might as well get this started early because I'm going absolutely crazy waiting for football.

Front Runners

Montee Ball - Running Back - Wisconsin

I highly doubt he will win. It's impossible to do any better than he did last year as only Barry Sanders has in the history of College Football, and yet he got completely jobbed by you assholes in the rest of the country. RGIII, okay maybe, but Richardson and Luck had far worse seasons. Anyway, I just put him first on here to vent, I'd say he's about the 3rd favorite. He has a legit shot to break every single Wisconsin rushing record except the big Ron Dayne total yards one. "Even at Wisconsin" that means something.

Matt Barkley - Quarterback - Southern California

His name has been on the trophy since he arrived on campus. He's the "presumptive nominee" and it's going to take something really special (much better stats and more flashy plays) to beat him. I don't see another RGIII out there. Well, okay, maybe...

Denard Robinson - Quarterback - Michigan

If they beat Alabama, he becomes the favorite to win the Heisman; it is only because I consider this unlikely that I don't think he has a chance to beat Barkley. Robinson will put up ridiculous stats; he's the futuristic Eric Crouch (who deserved to win his Heisman, by the way). He can't throw, but he'll do enough in the air against shitty teams to make it look like he can, and he also has playmakers that can turn dump offs and crossing routes into 80 yard TDs.

Tyrann Mathieu - Cornerback - Louisiana State

Just because he was a finalist last year. He won't win. He's a super flashy player, but I'm not the first person to say that he's actually not a great defender. Special teams players don't win this award.

Some People Like These Guys, But They Won't Win

Marcus Lattimore - Running Back - South Carolina

Complete stud until he got injured, right? In 5 SEC games last year he ran for 460 yards for 4.46 yards per carry. That is not studly. Great physical specimen and will probably be a good NFL back, but won't put up the stats necessary to win the Heisman. Although apparently just being a starting RB with a great body in the SEC is enough to finish 3rd and win the Doak Walker Award ahead of far better candidates, so maybe he'll be a finalist.

Tyler Wilson - Quarterback - Arkansas

It's really hard to win the Heisman when you don't win your division. I don't see him putting up shootout numbers in the SEC West (like RGIII did in the Big 12), which is what he'd have to do to win it with a 10-2 record and cotton bowl appearance. Also, some legit coaching questions.

Aaron Murray - Quarterback - Georgia

For him to pass Barkley, Robinson, and Wilson he would have to win the SEC and do it in style. It's POSSIBLE, but odds are the best he can do is match Barkley, who would get the reputation boost.

Robert Woods - Wide Receiver - Southern California

It is going to be impossible for him to win the Heisman over Matt Barkley.

Tajh Boyd - Quarterback - Clemson

He'll probably look like the front runner after 6 weeks and then pull a Clemson.

Legitimate Darkhorses

Geno Smith - Quarterback - West Virginia

I don't know if you can call someone a darkhorse if they threw for 4300 yards and 31 TDs as a junior, but he should be able to match those stats in the pass wacky and friendly Big 12. The only thing I worry about is that the Big 12 is soft... but not as soft as the Big East. He's going to need to do even more than last year in ostensibly a better conference. All those road games in Texas could be taxing as well.

Kenjon Barmer - Running Back - Oregon

He's going to pick up right where LaMichael James left off, and if he doesn't...

De'Anthony Thomas - Slash - Oregon

...it is because this guy is a Heisman finalist. 2 carries, 155 yards in the Rose Bowl. He'll run back a few punts and kickoffs too and probably strike the pose in week 12 if he's in the hunt. He had over 2,000 all purpose yards last year and 18 TDs. As a 3rd stringer. Slash, baby.

Collin Klein - Quarterback - Kansas State

As has already been stated, the Big 12 features some bad defenses. Last year Klein rushed for 1100 yards and threw for almost 2000 more. He also showed up at the end of games in big moments. I don't think he can win, but I think Kansas State could make a serious push for 11-1 and Klein should get to NYC if that's the case.

Eddie Lacy - Running Back - Alabama

Trent Richardson's good-not-great year was enough to get him to New York last year. Lacy has a shot to match those numbers.

Don't think I missed anyone, but feel free to add, comment, and prognosticate.

Defend this statement, lawyer.

Re: Heisman Thread 2012

I am not a lawyer, I just have the expensive degree and 3 years of misery aided only by essentially a 3 year bender. It wasn't hard, just miserable. Suing people for a living doesn't exactly fill one with a great sense of pride and purpose. Although I suppose in the South I'd still be called "Lawyer", or at least in the south of 100 years ago.

ANYWAY, KC Joyner already did this for me

Quote:
His 8.8 YPA in a seven-game analysis of the toughest passing offenses LSU faced last year (of which Mathieu played in only six because of a suspension) was higher than the YPA marks posted by Morris Claiborne (7.5) and Tharold Simon (3.6) in those same contests.

Mathieu didn't make up for the higher YPA in the interception department, either, as his two picks were only equal to Simon's interception mark and were far behind Claiborne's team-leading six picks. Mathieu's big-play potential on special teams would certainly warrant his selection as a top player in that area, but when it comes to cornerback play, his history says he is more apt to give up a big play than he is to make one.

Re: Heisman Thread 2012

YPA Stathead drivel doesnt count, he was never asked to do anything other then create absolute havoc on the field. The Tiger defense was good enough for him to be a nearly permanent ballhawk. Of course those numbers would be high. Use the context of the defensive scheme before using plug and play statistics.

Mathieu had only two picks...yup, but he also had 6 forced fumbles (5 recovered) with two returned for TD. That sounds like a defensive stat, but it's not included by statheads who look position by position like its fantasy sports. Mathieu also led the Tigers defense in tackles (76), a defense good for number 2 in the nation. Mathieu was everywhere and in on every play. He also won the Chuck Bednarik and SEC DPOY, and SEC Championship MVP, all based on defense. That's pretty damn lucky ATLien.

So your highness I fully object to the Lawyers use of one stat that doesnt even consider role or the type of player in question. Its like saying Ndamukong Suh didnt deserve all those awards because he only had 2 interceptions all season too. Its not really his department, but he still did it.

EDIT: Also if I recall correctly we have both spent enough on student loans to call ourselves whatever we want. I'm Sir Doctor Geaux Tigers Esquire PHD, MD, CPA, LPN.com

EDIT: My next post in this thread will be about the 2012 Heisman promise.

It isn't a reliable enough statistic. You can believe he'll get every bounce again, but it isn't going to happen.

Re: Heisman Thread 2012

I'll add that West Virginia is getting overrated by the media. Previous season's bowl performance usually doesn't predict anything & they struggled some what in the shitty Big East. Losses to Syracuse, Louisville. Won by 3 or less to USF, Pitt, Cincy. All at the end of the season. So yeah, I'm selling on Geno Smith too.

if the big 12 is soft, what does that make every conference that isn't the sec? softer?
