Big East schism muddies Irish move to ACC

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame's athletic director says the recently announced split between the Big East and seven schools that don't play major college football could complicate the Fighting Irish's exit from the conference.

"Those two parties have to divide assets," Jack Swarbrick told reporters Monday. "It poses a question about who you're even talking to. Who is the Big East? Which of the two sides of that has the Big East name and rights, and who might lay claim to the Notre Dame affiliation going forward? It's an interesting dynamic to try and figure out where all that's headed. One of the real challenges we have right now is trying to assess when that might settle out."

Notre Dame is coming to the ACC early;
football arrangement still won't start until 2014

Notre Dame will become an official partial member of the ACC on July 1 this year after coming to an agreement to leave the fractured Big East. The decision was described by the league as "amicable."

That means the ACC will welcome Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame this year, making it a 15-team league for most sports.

ACC commissioner John Swofford released this statement about today's news:

“Our conference, schools and fans are delighted that Notre Dame will join the ACC on July 1, 2013. The addition of Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, followed by Louisville in 2014, positions us extremely well with an outstanding collection of 15 member institutions.

“As was previously announced, our annual five games against Notre Dame in football will begin with the 2014 season. This not only will enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement.

Clarifying Notre Dame's ACC football arrangement

Big news now that Notre Dame's move to the ACC will take place on July 1, but this will have little impact on football this fall. Since I've been getting plenty of questions about it, here's a quick refresher course for what this means on the gridiron:

ACC and Notre Dame Announce Five-Game Football Schedules for 2014-2016

First Three Years of Notre Dame's ACC Football Opponents Set

GREENSBORO, NC — The Atlantic Coast Conference and the University of Notre Dame today announced the ACC opponents the Fighting Irish will play in the first three seasons of their football partnership with the league that begins with the 2014 season.

As part of the agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame will play five ACC teams each year, alternating between three home games and two away and two home games and three away each year. Notre Dame will face every ACC team at least once in the first three-year rotation of games.

“The football partnership between the ACC and Notre Dame will not only enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “One of the benefits, moving forward, is that almost all of our student-athletes will have an opportunity to play against Notre Dame during their ACC careers which is extremely special.”

2014
Notre Dame will play host to Louisville, North Carolina and Wake Forest. The Irish will have road games against Florida State and Syracuse.

2015
Clemson, Pittsburgh and Virginia will play host to the Irish with Notre Dame hosting Boston College and Georgia Tech.

2016
the Irish will play host to Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech and will have road contests with NC State and Syracuse.

Notre Dame to examine using stadium location
as hub for student life and academic facilities

The University of Notre Dame announced today (May 2) that it is exploring an innovative approach to campus planning that would take advantage of the central location of the football stadium to make it a hub for, among other possibilities, a student center, media center and classroom and conference center.

Potential areas of examination include constructing additions to the stadium to provide:
•Space for classrooms, conferences, speakers, meetings, receptions and other events.

•A student center for assembly and activity areas.

•Resources for media, including facilities for the University’s expanding video and digital initiatives for academic purposes and external relations, as well as a press box.

•A location for various hospitality functions for community and campus patrons.

•Enhancements to the fan experience, including premium seating options.
