The bigger picture is that deadspin got to say FU to all the major media outlets that never fact checked this story and played it up like ESPN and SI.

As far as for Te'o, he is entering the draft process and he is going to have to answer a lot of questions about this. From nim's theory, to how dumb is he and how much did he really know.

Again, leveraging fake cancer to increase your shot at the Heisman isn't okay. Or, he's Vince Young-level dumb. Or, he'll be the highest profile male American athlete to ever come out as gay. Any way, it's a story.

The guy has been going around doing cancer charity, speaking with parents of dieing children about their mutual grief. If he knew anything about this that is extremely messed up.

I can't believe he's going to pile onto the lie with this ridiculous hoax thing. Now they're talking about investigators getting involved. He can't live this lie forever. I would venture to guess Nim is right with the gay thing. If that is the case, this could be a moment for him to step out and man up. Embrace it and clear or path for others like him so that they don't have to live the same lies he did. Of course, this is all just an assumption. That being said, I don't buy the "hoax" thing one bit.

Who sits with someone on the phone every night for "hours" for such a long period of time just for a hoax? He never once mentioned he never actually met the girl in real life? You'd think that he would... I dunno... have a ****ing funeral to attend? Maybe he'd want to go visit her parents? What a bunch of garbage.

plenty of people who meet someone online lie about it.

i think him being gay is possible. it's also definitely possible that he just fell for a dude posing as a girl and was lying about meeting her and talking on the phone because as a superstar college football player, having an online girlfriend is something he'd get tons of shit for.

either way, he also had to be in on the fake death thing.

I kinda hope he's gay to be honest. The sports world could use a high profile athlete to come out of the closet. I can't believe it's 2013 and there still hasn't been one to do so(correct me if I'm wrong but I don't know of any).
