Best Freshman class ever?

What do you think? Guard wise I think it is without a doubt. Besides the guards theres a lot of great talent out there. Love, Singler, Beasley, Blake Griffin, Patrick Patterson, DeAndre Jordan, Donte Greene, Nick Calathes, Austin Daye, JJ Hickson, Taylor King, on and on.... It seems like this class has more Freshman that are producing right away then I can remember in a long time.

Re: Best Freshman class ever?

NBA rule and at least Mayo, Gordon, Rose, Beasley, Greene, Jordan, Hickson and possibly Bayless are all in the NBA. I don't think it's the best collection of freshman, because even though Kevin Garnett didn't go to college in 1996 the following guys went to college:

Stephon Marbury, Vince Carter, Antwan Jamison, Jelani McCoy, Robert Traylor, Ron Mercer, Paul Pierce, Chauncey Billups, Shareef Abdur Rahim (this guy was a 25 ppg scorer as a freshman).

I mean there were a lot of really good players in that class, but I can't remember them all off the top of my head so far. Some like Randell Jackson, Louis Bullock, Albert White and Sam Okey were decent, but since they didn't make the pros no one would give damn.

Re: Best Freshman class ever?

I think it's even deeper than the 1996 class. Keep going with this year's class - guys on mid-major teams and on smaller-profile high majors - guys like Pat Mills (ok, so maybe he was a one-hit wonder). I think the number is greater than that class. Now, will they be better pros? Beats me. But there are a TON of guys who can flat out play this year. And I think they'll be more guys who make a name for themselves before the end of the year (for example a guy like Jon Diebler).

Re: Best Freshman class ever?

So maybe they are just getting more chances to play due to going to different schools. All the HS kids I've heard about have walked into situations where they either a) be starting b) given the rock immediately. I think with so many guys going pro last year, it was bound to happen. Like Georgetown has two good freshman in Freeman and Wright, but no one talks about them because they are playing behind more experienced players.

Mills isn't a one hit wonder, he's a solid player. He's just undersized preventing him from going to a bigger name school.

Re: Best Freshman class ever?

To this point in the season, he has been a one hit wonder. My statment was not intended to mean he'll never be any good. Look at his stats from the first five games. I guess maybe he's had to good games. The other being against Sonoma State.

I think the reason for that is two-fold. Obviously, this class is extremely deep in talent. However, the degree to which these freshmen have been able to contribute is due to an increase in the confidence of coaches in their youngsters' ability to contribute right away. The success of guys like Oden and Durant last year, as well as the fear that talented freshmen will be one-and-done, encourages coaches to get as much as they can out of guys the second they hit campus.

Re: Best Freshman class ever?

For pure talent and eventual NBA contributions within a class, 1979-80's freshman class was pretty amazing.

Sam Bowie
Antoine Carr
Quintin Dailey
Darren Daye (Austin Daye of Gonzaga's dad, fmr Celtic)
Sidney Green
Clark Kellogg
Greg Kite
Sidney Low
