Davis COY/Hansbrough POY
Link
Quote:
Tyler Hansbrough had a very busy Friday morning on the biggest weekend of his young basketball career.
The North Carolina junior forward was selected The Associated Press' college basketball player of the year, an honor that came less than an hour after he was presented the Oscar Robertson Trophy by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association as their player of the year.
Drake's Keno Davis was selected coach of the year by the AP, and he, too, had a busy morning as he swept the awards given Friday.
He and his father, Dr. Tom Davis, who won the award in 1987 at Iowa, became the first father and son to win the award.
"I remember seeing this trophy when my father won it and thinking that except for championships there couldn't be anything better to win," Davis said.
Davis led Drake to a school-record 28 wins, its first Top 25 ranking since 1975 and its first NCAA tournament berth since 1971. He becomes the second straight first-year coach to win the award. Like Washington State's Tony Bennett last season, he succeeded his father as head coach.

Re: Davis COY/Hansbrough POY
Ehh I still think Beasley deserved player of the year but i'm not gonna knock Hansbrough for getting it. I think McKillop deserved coach of the year IMO, again I can't really knock Davis because he had a great regular season.

Re: Davis COY/Hansbrough POY
I would have given it to Beasley as well.
My COY would have been Bo Ryan (he lost a NPOY Candidate and senior point guard!), but that's just because I'm a homer who cherry picks popular weak arguments to support his case. 31 wins, most in school history!

Re: Davis COY/Hansbrough POY
How does a guy with better numbers than last year's POY not get this? I don't care if Hansbrough's team has a better record. This isn't a team award.

Re: Davis COY/Hansbrough POY
They should have had co-POY awards. Both of them deserved it. Can't argue about Keno getting the COY. He did a hell of a job. Drake better enjoy him while they can, he won't be there for long.

Yeah but team has to be in the equation somehow it can't be just a statistical award.

Re: Davis COY/Hansbrough POY
if we're talkin about a guy with Beasley's number but on a team that's .500, then fine. KSU, however, was not average. they were in and out of the top 25 throughout the season and beat Kansas.

Holy crap, Bo actually did finish 2nd in the voting. Haha.

Having co-awards just makes us all out to be sissies. Make a call and stick with it.
Beasley's numbers are only slightly better then Hansbrough's and the to me if you want to be POY you have to be on a top 10 team (or be very close to it). So I go with Hansbrough. And to compare Beasley's stats to Durant's stats is faulty because, Durant did not have a challenger as good as Hanbrough was this year.
Hard to beleive that five years ago, TJ Ford won POY with 15pts -8 ast -40% shooting, and Carmelo Anthony at 22-10 was not even an All-American even though he led Syracuse to a 3 seed (I'm totally ignoring the post-season)
