Top Unsigned Prospects
Conference Breakdown
Here is a look at five classes that aren't currently in the top 25, but could end up having a major impact.
Georgia Tech
#81 Zam Frederick, PG/WG
Top 200 Anthony Morrow, WG
This group has developed very slowly, but Paul Hewitt still is on track to land a top-10 class for 2004. Tech was involved with top 50 prospects Russell Robinson and Jason Rich, but Hewitt decided to take Frederick and Morrow instead. Both are talented players, and both were willing to commit before the mad free-for-all of guard commitments began two weeks ago. The Jackets have yet to land a big man, but are almost assured to end up with a couple of premier ones. Dwight Howard still lists Tech as a college option, but realistically, the Hewitt is the odd-on favorite to land both Morris and Dickey. With these two, Tech easily has one of the top classes in the country.
Virginia Tech
#58 Marquie Cook, PG
JC Transfer Justin Holt, WF
Seth Greenburg’s new pitch probably has something to do with how Tech is going to be a part of the ACC next year. Whatever it is, it’s working. Cook is one of the top players to choose the Hokies in a long time, and Holt’s stock is rising. The Hokies could be in good with Roy Bright, and even top 10 wing Malik Hairston has started mentioning Virgina Tech. The real strength of this class will be determined when it’s big men sign. Tyus Thomas is an intriguing PF who might wait until the spring, but has the VaTech high on his list.
Dayton
Top 200 Trent Meachum, PG/WG
Top 200 Jimmie Binnie, PG
Top 200 Norm Plummer, BF
UR Brian Roberts, PG
UR Chris Alvarez, WF
No huge names here, but an excellent foundational class. Meachum and Binnie came out of nowhere this summer, and are major sleepers. By the time major programs picked up on them, Dayton was already in. This could be a group that keeps Dayton atop the A-10 for the next four years.
Miami
#53 CJ Giles, PF
JC Transfer Greg Brown, PG/WG
Perry Clark shockingly beat out Lute Olson, Bill Self, and several other big recruiting names to land the quickly-rising Giles. Brown is a name that has been around the block, but his talent is undeniable. Several other borderline top 100 wings are listing the Canes, such as Tyree Evans, Curtis Allen, and CJ Anderson.
Arizona State
#95 Tim Pierce, WF
After miraculously nabbing program savior Ike Diogu two seasons ago, it’s becoming clear that Rob Evans has turned the Sun Devil program around. Evans already has Pierce, a top 100 swingman, on board for 2004, but is only getting started. Highly regarded shooter Lee Cummard is down to ASU and BYU, while standout JC PG Michael Ford is apparently on the verge of a commitment. For big men, the Sun Devils look very strong with 6-11 Mo Camara.
