I think this is the year Shaka goes next level with VCU.
I think Bo Ryan is a better coach than Sean Miller, personally. But when you list 10 and I quibble with 1 of them, that's a pretty solid list. Jay Wright isn't far off either (and I dislike Villanova, but he's pretty good). In a one-game scenario, I'd even take Phil Martelli against Sean Miller with equal talent.
Bo definitely needs to be on the list. He's far more accomplished than Shaka or Marshall, and he's straight up a better coach than Roy Williams or John Calipari.
I've done my duty to school and coach lol, it's a good list other than that
The only guys I would 100% put above Bo Ryan are Coach K and Bill Self. Izzo is a split as far as I'm concerned; Izzo has more success because he gets better talent, but Bo has always had Izzo's number.
The low lows really separate the top coaches IMO. Duke's only poor season since K got there (give or take the first couple) was when he sat out a year for medical reasons. Self has never had a weak team either. All those other guys aside from Bo and Izzo (although it HAS happened once I believe) throw their hands up and say "well if I don't have the talent this year what am I supposed to do?" Talent wise, Bo had an atrocious team in 12/13, but he willed them to a 5 seed. His worst year was 2006 when he had two significant contributors suspended for academic reasons in January and ended up with Gullickson (freshman walkon) and Chappell (garbage) combining for 30 minutes a night.
Cal is number one right now. Whether he can coach or not matters not when he's recruiting the way he does. And yes he can actually, begrudgingly I think the only way other schools are going to shine is if he goes to the NBA. He and Coach K have too much of an advantage right now.
nothing against him but I really do not consider him a top 10 coach at any point of his career
