Re: NCAA March Madness Tournament mock draft

My simple advice, is don't complicate things. Pick how many games each team will play, don't choose many upsets, and multiply PPG's by games.

That's mostly what you do, but there's actually some additional strategy after that.

For starters, once the brackets are set, you look to pick players from teams that won't meet each other until your predicted Final Four or Elite Eight. The last thing you want to do is pick a player from each of two teams that would face each other in the second round, because obviously one would get quickly knocked out.

Additionally, in later rounds you can either chose high scorers on teams who aren't expected to win more than one game, or look for a bit player on a team that you think will make the Finals. If the latter plays 6 games for you, he may still score more than a 20 ppg guy whose team loses in the first round. Both strategies have their risks and rewards. You may get lucky and the high scorer may lead his team on a cinderella run to the Sweet 16, but the chances are higher that the team loses its opening game. Alternatively, if you think UCLA is going to reach the Finals, you could draft a player like Luc Richard Mbah a Moute who only chips in here or there but whose sum total contribution over the tournament run may be considerable. But you had better pray that UCLA is going deep.

Like any fantasy draft, having somewhat of an idea for ADP or Average Draft Position would be helpful. If I know which players and teams are undervalued I might be able to wait a round to grab certain players and maximize my draft value. Since no Tennessee players have been selected yet in this mock draft, I might take advantage of that and realize that I can wait until the 3rd or 4th round to draft some marquee Volunteers instead of burning a valuable first or second round pick on one.

TM how could you pick Shan Foster!?!? This team has no chance of winning a championship!?!?

Why doesn't this board ever do fun things like this?

I would definitely be interested in doing a similar fantasy tournament with 9 other Basketball Forum members. However, as has been indicated, basketball is about more than just scoring and someone would have to come up with a formula that incorporates assists, rebounds, steals, blocked shots, etc. Intuitively, I don't think they should all receive one point each.

Holding the draft would be tricky, too. You'd only have a few days between Selection Sunday and the start of games the following Thursday. You'd likely have to do the draft at around 9 or 10 PM EST so that west coast members could make it, and with a 1 or 2 minute timer to get all the picks in before it gets too late.

1) You're right, they don't. But they have a chance to play at least 3 games. Therefore he can give you at 60+ points.

2) Becuase the same 2 people get tired of coming up with and running things on their own. So you're volunteering, right? Or just going to complain about why we don't do anything?

Re: NCAA March Madness Tournament mock draft

This is a very fair point TM. I would offer to do this. Although it would be difficult. If you guys were interested we'd have to do it on Sunday night immediately following selection sunday. 10pm-12:30,1am. A bit late but this could be fun. A little competition would certainly help strengthen activity on the boards.

How I think we should do it:

general rules: 10 teams, 10 rounds, "snake style draft"

scoring: 1 point for points, rebounds; 2 points for assists and steals; 3 points for blocks

draft: does everyone have instant messenger or yahoo messenger (if you've ever done a yahoo fantasy league you have messenger)? If so we can all do it in a chat room. I'm pretty sure you can sign up for yahoo messenger free and pretty easy so that may be the way to go.

You will get 90 seconds to draft a player. Then the player behind you can steal. I can keep time.

Anyone interested?? Shoot me a pm. If I get 4 or 5 I'll post a thread.

Here is some additional strategy to think about.
  • Pick guards over big men. They handle the ball more and will take more shots if they are losing.
  • Spread your picks out across all four regions.
  • Avoid picking two players from the same team.
  • Try to select players from the top 4 seeds in each region. (Try to limit your selection of players from teams seeded higher than 4th).
  • When analyzing the top seeds in each region, stick with teams from the big conferences rather than the mid-majors.
  • Never pick players whose teams will play each other in the first or second round.
  • With your late draft picks select players from higher seeds who are first or second on their team in scoring rather than players from #1 and #2 seeds that are 5th or 6th in scoring. The guy who gets 25 points a game is usually better than the player who plays 4 games and averages only 5 points.
  • Pick 3 point shooters. 3 points are better than 2, plus they will shoot more 3 pointers if they are losing.
  • Pick guards who will get to the foul line late in a game (point guards or good foul shooters). This is a critical factor. So many times a game is already decided and the losing team just keeps fouling at the end. This is an easy way to add on more points.
