Tulsa 66ers To Hold Local Tryouts This Weekend

TULSA, Okla., October 20, 2006 - The Tulsa 66ers and head coach Joey Meyer will hold open tryouts on Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22 at Broken Arrow Community Center, located at 1500 S. Main Street in Broken Arrow.

"Local tryouts provide an excellent opportunity for players, especially within our community, to compete at a high skill level and display their talents," said Meyer. "It's exciting to see young basketball players competing for the opportunity to move closer to their NBA dreams."

The Tulsa 66ers open tryouts offer local athletes an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of D-League coaches while they compete to earn a position in the team's official training camp. Training camp is scheduled to begin in November.

Tryouts are limited to the first 150 players to register.

The Tulsa 66ers tip off their sophomore season with back-to-back home games against the Arkansas RimRockers Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24-25. Both games begin at 7 p.m. Nineteen of the 66ers' 24 home games will be held on Friday or Saturday nights, allowing Tulsa families the opportunity to see professional basketball when it best fits their schedules. For ticket information, log on to tulsa66ers.com or call the ticket office at (918) 585-8444.

Behind the Bleachers

Let's start by eliminating the movie. It's not bad, just dishonest. This happens a lot: A complicated and interesting true story gets condensed, then dumbed down, for the big screen. The events are changed to make the story more dramatic. Booby Miles didn't hurt his knee on a bone-rattling tackle during a game, but in a preseason scrimmage when it snagged on the turf. A minor quibble, maybe, but "Friday Night Lights" is a sacred tome for avid sports readers. More inexcusable is the final game, changed into the state championship for the movie instead of a semifinal. This story was fine without being tinkered.

Rating the value of Wizards

Confession: I'm a bit of a stats geek. So when Sports Illustrated published the equation it uses for its NBA Player Value Ratings, it immediately got the wheels turning. How would different Dakota Wizards players stack up?

Already having the Wizards' stats in a spread sheet, it took just a minute or two to plug in the PVR formula (see accompanying chart), developed by David Sabino.

I was particularly interested in seeing how SI's rankings compared to the all-time Wizards team that Dave Joerger, Casey Owens, Scooter Pursley, Kerry Collins and I selected last season.
