Free Agency

Alright, I know it's early but maybe we could keep this thread for a while and bump it when the offseason approaches

Coming off the books
Alan Henderson: 8,273,125
Darrell Armstrong: 2,275,000
Avery Johnson: 745,000

Heres a link

So, our salary cap situation will be: $86,343,237.

Now, here are a list of free agents

Who should we go after
We have the MLE & the LLE to spend. Here are some players who we could go after
Othella Harington: Unrestricted Free Agent
Nikoloz Tskitishvili: Unrestricted Free Agent
Ryan Humphrey: Unrestricted Free Agent
Marcus Fizer: Unrestricted Free Agent
Mark Madsen: Unrestricted Free Agent
Casey Jacobsen: Unrestricted Free Agent
Reggie Evans: Restricted Free Agent

Out of all of those names, Ryan Humphrey and Marcus Fizer interest me the most. As you noticed, they were all mostly hustle backup frontcourt players, who can defend.

Casey is in there, because I doubt the Suns look to keep him and could provide helpful when he comes in a maybe makes a 3 here and there.

Then, there's the draft. I really doubt we bother looking into this, as we'll have a late 50's pick (I believe so) and there's no real reason to care about that pick. (Unless you get a Ginobili)

I also would like going after Haslem. But I think we will be set at the PG for quite some time and we shouldn't shuffle with thta position anymore.

I would love to bring a Brevin Knight type PG who will always give up the ball. He is one of the best passing PG's in the league. This would also allow JT play more SG if we need him too. Maybe just give him a one year contract so he can help out DHouse and then DHouse can take over for good.

True. I did think about Knight but I think we just need to keep our PG spot stationary right now. I don't think we really need to add another. But if we did make a move for Knight, it wouldn't bother me.

With Finley, Marquis, Howard and Stackhouse maning the 2/3 positions, I don't think we need to play Terry there unless we have injury problems and are forced to.

In fact I am not sure that I want JT playing there at all. And not because he can't do it but because I want him to develop his PG guard skills and the more they stick him at the 2 the less he is going to get used to being a PG.

Maybe when Devin Harris is ready to be a star PG than we could use JT in the NVE role of a couple of years ago. NVE would come in for Nash sometimes but he also would play with Nash alot of other times which caused matchup nightmares for the other team. It also caused us some rebounding nightmares as well. I remember alot of second and third shots by the opposition when we played that lineup.

Personally I would like us to stick to conventional lineups and enough with the trickery. Everytime Nelson does it, it causes some problem for our opponent but it always causes some problem for us as well in some other way. Lets just get good players and play them at the normal positions.

As far as Free Agents go I would go after a 3rd PG ( I don't like Armstrong that much ) and I would certainly target another PF as my primary free agent target. Dirk can not play 44 minutes a night and we need to be able to bring a real PF in when he goes out.

I of course like Haslem but how are we going to get him?

Why oh Why did we have to give away Danny Fortson? Sorry I am digressing again.

I still would trade Alan Henderson for P.J. Brown before the deadline but I may be alone on this one. We could try and resign Henderson for 1/3 the money he is making right now. But for some reason I still think we need an upgrade there.

Or we could resign Henderson for 3 mil and still go out and get another PF like:

Evans
Tskitshvili

Yeah that is the only problem. He would probably rather stay with the Heat or another team where he would start.
Why oh Why did we have to give away Danny Fortson? Sorry I am digressing again.
We gave up Danny because he didn't fit into our system. Personally I didn't think Nellie really like him.

I wouldn't because we would have to pay P.J. about 8 mill for 2 more years. Yes salary cap doesn't matter to Marc that much but I don't think he is that much of an improvement. Plus he wouldn't get that much time.
Or we could resign Henderson for 3 mil and still go out and get another PF like:
Evans
Tskitshvili
I think we could resign Alan for the minimum or LLE and he would be fine with it. I mean he isn't the best of PF's out there and I don't think he would demand that much or get it. Then yes we could get someone like Lue or Knight to be our 3rd PG. We could also get more depth at the PF/C when we have to play teams like Miami, Sacramento, or San Antonio.

I think we should go after:

1. Haslem
2. Evans
3. Tskitishvili (but not before we re-sign Henderson, a fairly proven PF)

I'm not putting too much thought into Free Agency, mainly because we won't have the money. Our team will be improved by trades for the next 2 to 3 summers, and I refuse to talk about who's gonna be trade bait in July in January.

Brevin Knight? When you have Devin Harris and Jason Terry? That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. Harris will be terrific in his 2nd year.

I think the Mavs should go after a high energy power forward. Someone who can give toughness and show their presense in the paint. Maybe someone like Reggie Evans, Udonis Haslem, or Mark Madsen.

Exactly, why would we need another PG to take away minutes from our up and coming star.

We don't need a PG, we need a backup C or PF who hustles. We don't need/shouldn't have Dirk having to play 42+ minutes. Thats why I want a backup scrappy PF. He'd preferably be able to play center aswell to help backup Damp.

Realisticly, I think this is what we should do
1. Reggie Evans: Been rebounding and hustling for Sonics all year. Good chance of signing him, as Ray will be getting alot this summer
Theo's contract
3 years, 11 million
2. Marcus Fizer: Good post defender, great rebounder. Can really help our offensive rebounding problems, I've noticed we have
Theo's contract
2 years, 6.8 million
3. Mark Madsen: I would have Ryan Humphrey here, but Madsen can also backup C. Only in the leage because he hustles
Theo's contract
LLE for 2 years
4. Ryan Humphrey: I really like this guy, he defends really well in the post, is a good rebounder and can score. Is very young, and is EXTREMELY athletic. Not too tall though
Theos contract
3 years. 6.5 million
5. Alan Henderson: Has been doing well for us, rebounding and scoring well. Been backing Dirk up pretty well
Theo's contract
3 years, 13 million

We do not need to go after any other wing players, as we have Finley, Daniels, Howard, Stack all sharing time there.

I would put Haslem as my number one option, but I don't think Miami will let him go. But if it's possible, get him for the MLE

Like I was saying, he would be our 3rd PG. He could be a big help just in case of an injury. I know DHouse will be awesome but we do need to have some emergency people just in case. I also think that we wouldn't have to pay Alan that much. I think he realizes he isn't a guy people are going to go after. I agree with everyone so far of going with a high energy PF/C. I also like the idea of resigning Alan and then bringing in a young guy and use Alan as a safety net just in case the young talent doesn't show his skills.

I agree, there is nothing wrong with having a 3rd PG. An injury to one of your top two and you are screwed if you don't have another guy. I know we could fill in with Marquis from time to time and if Marquis was here and playing right now than maybe I would not feel like we needed that 3rd guy but I am not a fan of Armstrong at all so I would like an upgrade to his roster slot.
