Star-Telegram Staff Writer
PORTLAND, Ore. - Avery Johnson keeps a notepad with him at all times. The Mavericks acting coach wants to be ready because he never knows when an idea is going to pop up.
"I'm consumed with [coaching] right now," Johnson said Wednesday. "I can't even think about doing other stuff now. I can't even take a nap."
Johnson's lack of sleep isn't limited to just worrying about what to do with the players. The coaching staff also turns a critical eye on itself, looking for points in each game in which Johnson and Co. could have done better.
"You don't do it so much from a statistical standpoint like we do with our basketball team," Johnson said. "With our team we grade penetrations, uncontested shots, transition defense and offensive efficiency.
"With the staff, we talk about some things in general. Maybe we should have been in a certain defense at a certain time, or maybe there was a play we should or shouldn't have called. Maybe there was a timeout situation where we should have used our [20-second timeout] and didn't. That's how we evaluate ourselves after the game."
Johnson has coached five games in relief of Don Nelson, who continues to recover from shoulder surgery. Although he's an admitted perfectionist, Johnson said he wouldn't hold his breath for a faultless sideline performance.
"Nobody ever coaches or plays a perfect game," Johnson said.

TORONTO – Avery Johnson's 10-game run as acting Mavericks coach convinced him of one thing.
"I'm definitely not quitting my day job," he said Sunday after the Mavericks held off Toronto, 122-113.
One thing is certain: His sendoff was anything but easy. The Mavericks blew most of a 25-point lead before holding on against the Raptors.
The best part of Johnson's time filling in for Don Nelson was that it showed Johnson that, yes, he really wants to be an NBA coach. And his future remains bright.
Johnson finished with a 7-3 record. That winning percentage is up slightly from the 24-12 ledger Nelson had before undergoing rotator-cuff surgery.
"In my mind, we had nine winnable games in this stretch," said Johnson, who clearly has the coaching profession's never-satisfied prerequisite down pat. "Just as much as we went 7-3, it could easily have been 8-2 or 9-1. That's the way I want my guys to think."
Johnson's job as fill-in also speaks to the consistency that Nelson, Del Harris, Larry Riley and Charlie Parker have developed as a coaching staff.
"Over the years, we've established a routine here," Harris said. "It's not a whole lot different with Avery. We all share in various responsibilities, we just miss Nellie's voice in it. But as far as the mechanics of it, it's really the same. The way that we've operated has proven to be pretty effective over the years."
Jason Terry said one thing stands out between Johnson and Nelson – the volume level in timeouts.
"Avery, definitely," Terry said when asked who yelled more, Nelson or Johnson. "That's the biggest difference, right there."
Nobody could find fault with the job Johnson did during his tenure.
"He's learned a lot, the experience is going to be invaluable for the long term and I think he's done a great job," owner Mark Cuban said.
Johnson will return to the lead assistant's chair on Tuesday against Chicago, when Nelson returns. He said there should be only one major difference – who does the majority of griping at the referees.
"They'll have to put some shackles on me," he said.
Co-captain Michael Finley said Johnson's tenure was excellent.
"If I had to give him a grade, it would be an A," he said.
------------------
The Mavericks will notice a difference when Don Nelson returns as coach.
False: When you boil it down, Don Nelson will be coaching the same batch of players that Avery Johnson has coached for the last couple of weeks while Nelson recovers from shoulder surgery. There are only so many ways you can tweak the playing rotation when you know Dirk Nowitzki, Erick Dampier, Josh Howard, Jason Terry, Michael Finley and Jerry Stackhouse are your top six weapons. You can nitpick about any number of game-to-game adjustments, no matter who is coaching. And believe me, D-Moore can pick some nits. He once sent a beer back because it didn't have enough head. It's believed to be the only time in history he's sent a beer back. Speaking of which, the biggest change anybody is going to notice is that the coach will be sipping a Bud Light instead of a Diet Coke during the postgame news conference.
Eddie Sefko
True: The Mavs will. We're not sure about Big Ed, because the team played three straight games without Nelson before he noticed something was different. OK, that's a cheap shot. But even Big Ed will tell you he's not big on nuance. Coaches are. Players are when it affects them. Part of the reason Erick Dampier and Devin Harris have made bigger contributions of late is that Avery Johnson has left them on the court for longer periods of time. Nelson is likely to use a quick hook with these players. Jerry Stackhouse, who emerged as the second option under Johnson, may now watch some of his minutes shift to Michael Finley. The changes will be subtle, but noticeable.
